Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science - transforming research discoveries into clinical treatment.
About us
The Perron Institute for Translational and Neurological Science, formerly the Western Australian Neuroscience Research Institute, is Western Australia's longest established medical research institute and has facilities within the QEII Medical Centre and Murdoch University. It brings together world-class scientists who have made ground breaking discoveries, yet it also has specialist neurology clinics with leading neurologists. This is its unique strength. The Institute provides a pathway for translating research into positive health outcomes for the community. Its work helps those suffering from conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone, spinal cord injury and muscle disorders such as muscular dystrophy and myositis. The Perron Institute has formal affiliations with The University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, the WA Department of Health and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. The Institute also has well-established links with universities and hospitals worldwide.

People with multiple sclerosis (MS) often experience lower bone density and earlier onset of Osteoporosis, increasing the risk of falls and/or fractures. The STRONG-MS study is evaluating a High-Intensity Resistance and Impact Training (HiRIT) program, to see whether it can improve bone health, muscle strength, mobility, and quality of life in people with MS. Over the course of 12-months, free exercise sessions will be attended twice-weekly, each lasting 30-minutes. Click here for eligibility criteria and more information: https://lnkd.in/ggU-ue6j

Have you ever wondered what is all the fuss about Compassionate Communities? This just published editorial in Palliative Care and Social Practice addresses the myths and misconceptions we often hear at national and international gatherings. Compassionate Communities approach to care is not simply another model of healthcare delivery, nor does it replace palliative care services. Compassionate Communities identify and connect the extensive yet fragmented support systems that already exist —families, neighbours, faith-based groups, volunteers, community programs, and health and social care services—by weaving them into cohesive networks. This approach recognises that most caregiving happens outside of clinical settings, with family caregivers and social networks providing the majority of care. It is a practice committed to social and system change by way of building and enhancing community capacity and civic action for better end of life care. With populations ageing at scale and palliative care demands escalating, activating Compassionate Communities is both a moral imperative and a practical necessity. Healthcare professionals, policymakers, funders, and community members must unite beyond traditional boundaries to transform how societies support anyone experiencing caregiving, dying, and grieving. These issues affect absolutely everyone, so we invite you to get into the action with us by joining the National Advocacy in Action Campaign. Check Compassionate Communities Australia advocacy Statements developed through roundtable discussions at CCAus recent National Forum (https://lnkd.in/g4Q_fdtx). They are for everyone’s use to improve systems in your communities in settings such as: health services, home, hospices, local government, residential aged care, workplaces, and equity and diversity. Special thanks to my co-author Dr Yong Hao Ng for sharing the same enthusiasm and vision. Yong Hao is from National University of Singapore and we are delighted that he is spending one year with us as Post Doctoral Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia and Perron Institute. Last night's Perron Institute Dementia and Parkinson's event at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club was a wonderful showcase of medical research which attracted a full house to hear from two of our top researchers. Professor David Blacker AM, spoke about his journey as a Neurologist with Parkinson's disease, his experience of receiving a Parkinson’s diagnosis, living with the condition, and devising a boxing program that promises to alleviate symptoms and promote a higher quality of life. Professor John Mamo outlined his work leading the PIA Study (Probucol in Alzheimers), with initial results showing great promise to allow patients a higher quality of life over a longer time period. Congratulations to Dr Julie Brose for being awarded the Business Events Perth Perron Institute Aspire Award to attend the World Federation of Occupational Therapists in Bangkok in 2026. Dr Brose is a a qualitative postdoctoral research fellow whose research at Perron Institute focuses on gaining a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of people living with life-limiting illnesses, and the families and professionals who support them. Through qualitative methods, Julie is investigating the nuance and complexity of living with neurodegenerative conditions, particularly motor neurone disease, with the goal of helping to shape more meaningful models of palliative and neurological care. Attending this international conference will allow Dr Brose to connect with leading researchers in neurological and palliative rehabilitation, foster new collaborations, and bring fresh perspectives back to Western Australia’s research community. #BEPerth #AspireAwards2025 #WAsBrightestMinds

Our new publication examines how youth navigate the mental-health, education and social systems in Australia. “Exploring the perspectives of young adults on mental healthcare and systemic health, education, and social challenges in Australia – a qualitative study” (Cooper et al., 2025) Bradley RobertsGeorgia LanderySarah Bates WoodlandKhan CollinsBernadette MajdaSusanne StanleyP. Anthony AkkariSean HoodJennifer Rodger Perron Institute What we did: We spoke to 17 young Australians (18-24 yrs) with lived experience of anxiety/depression about their journeys through health, education and social systems. What we found: 1. Fragmented service pathways and prolonged wait times created barriers to seeking help. 2. Mental health literacy in schools is limited, and stigma in some social/family settings hinder access to mental health care. 3. Youth-specific training among clinicians was perceived as inadequate. Why this matters: To better support young people we need integrated youth mental-health hubs, improved collaboration between schools and health services, and culturally inclusive anti-stigma initiatives. Based on your experience, what is the biggest barrier young people face in accessing mental-health support? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e_nCVtWu
