We're pleased to announce that Dr Michael Hoskins has received an Assembly Education Award at the APSR 2025 Congress in Manila. Michael's research examining myeloperoxidase-antibody positivity in interstitial lung disease was selected for this award by the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology's Interstitial Lung Disease Assembly. The award recognises excellence in respiratory research and included a presentation to leading experts in the field, providing Michael with expert feedback on his findings. This achievement highlights the quality of interstitial lung disease research being conducted at the Institute for Respiratory Health. #lungresearch #research #lungresearchsuperpower

What a powerful evening at Windsor Cinema on Monday night. Thank you to everyone who joined us for NCARD's special screening of YURLU | COUNTRY. The post-film Q&A with Professor Y C Gary Lee, Dr Wee Loong Chin, Coreen Parker, Johnnell Parker, and filmmaker Yaara Bou Melhem sparked important conversations about clinical care, research and advocacy in asbestos-related disease. This deeply moving film reminds us why NCARD's work matters - supporting communities affected by asbestos exposure and advancing research to improve outcomes for people living with mesothelioma. Thank you to everyone who came to #WalkWithBanjima and support the #CleanUpWittenoom campaign. #NCARDresearch #YurluCountry #AsbestosAwareness #mesotheliomaresearch

Yurlu Country is the story of Wittenoom and the effect of those mines and tailings on the Banjima people….and all of us. It’s a sobering and beautiful story. Thank you to Institute for Respiratory Health’s Y C Gary Lee for telling me about it. Go see it. https://yurlucountry.com

This Asbestos Awareness Month, we invite you to a powerful screening that brings together the personal story of resilience with crucial research. Yurlu | Country follows Banjima Elder Maitland Parker's final year as he fights to heal his ancestral lands in the Pilbara, home to Wittenoom – the largest uncontained asbestos contaminated site in the world. For 80 years, blue asbestos mining has poisoned Banjima Country. Aboriginal communities in Western Australia suffer amongst the highest mesothelioma death rates globally. Join us for a post-screening panel discussion with leading experts from National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD), including Professor Y C Gary Lee and Dr Wee Loong Chin, alongside Banjima Traditional Owner Johnnell Parker and Walkley Award-winning director Yaara Bou Melhem. This event highlights how clinical care, research and advocacy work together to improve outcomes for people affected by asbestos-related disease. 📅 Monday 10 November, 6.30pm 📍 Windsor Cinema, Nedlands Book your tickets (Select Windsor Cinema): https://lnkd.in/dBmSAtMi Image: Illuminate Films #AsbestosAwarenessMonth #lungresearch #research

Today is World Mesothelioma Day. For the past 30 years, researchers right here in Western Australia have been leading the fight against this deadly asbestos cancer. The National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD) Biobank holds over 10,000 blood, tissue and DNA samples donated by patients — helping deliver global breakthroughs, including a simple blood test now used to monitor the disease. But you know what? We couldn’t have done it without our local community. Thank you to every donor and family who made this research possible. This #WorldLungDay, we’re highlighting the impact of lung research right here in Western Australia — research that helps people live longer, breathe easier and spend more time where it matters most. Lidia Andrews' late husband Greg Stevenson received care guided by the same approach now being tested in a world-first clinical trial led by Professor Gary Lee. The trial combines medical treatment with exercise, nutrition and emotional support — helping people with incurable lung disease stay stronger and out of hospital. Today, Lidia is a member of the trial’s patient reference group, using her lived experience to help shape better care for others in our community. The Institute for Respiratory Health has been leading vital lung research in WA for 25 years. Through our Every Breath Matters campaign, we’re working to give back the breaths that lung disease takes away. If you’d like to help support this research and give back the breaths lung disease takes away, donate today - resphealth.org.au #worldlungday #everybreathmatters #medicalresearch

We were proud to mark 25 years of respiratory research at our Anniversary Symposium on 17 September at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. The event honoured a quarter century of achievement and highlighted the innovation and talent of the next generation of researchers. It was a pleasure to welcome so many familiar faces whose contributions have helped shape respiratory health in WA. It reinforced our commitment to advancing respiratory research and improving lung health for all. To acknowledge and honour early to mid-career researchers the following awards were presented: Rising Star Awards: Dr Kelly Short (The University of Western Australia) Dr Sanjay Ramakrishnan (Institute for Respiratory Health) Poster Presentation Prizes: Aaron Gomes (Murdoch University) Jessica Boulter (Curtin University) Congratulations to all recipients and thank you to everyone who contributed to a memorable day of research and collaboration. 📷 - Aaron Gomes, Dr Sanjay Ramakrishnan, Dr Kelly Short and Jess Boulter #medicalresearch #lungresearchsuperpower 📷 Nerellie Richards
