Through the Perkins Partners program, part of GenesisCare's donation provides funding for PhD students who are often restricted in their ability to earn an income due to their study commitments. Our heartfelt congratulations to the Perkins inaugural Director, Prof Peter Klinken AC for being inducted into the WA Science Hall of Fame. From the earliest days of the WA Institute for Medical Research, which is now the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, Peter has dedicated his life's work as a leukaemia, cancer and anaemia researcher to advancing medical research and science. He was instrumental in growing a small team of researchers to over 200 during his time at the Perkins, driving the vision for a robust, world-leading medical research sector in WA. Peter continued to advocate for WA as the State's longest serving Chief Scientist, and he still supports the local medical research sector that he helped to build. On behalf of everyone at the Perkins, we are thrilled that Peter's achievements in medical research and dedication to science have been recognised with his induction into the WA Science Hall of Fame at last night's 2025 WA Premier's Science Awards. We’re thrilled to share that Hanane Belhoul-Fakir has been named the Perkins Business Events Perth’s 2025 Aspire Award recipient. The Aspire Awards provide travel funding for recipients to attend an international conference of their choice, supporting global collaboration and showcasing WA’s research excellence on the world stage. Hanane will attend the 12th European Stroke Organisation Conference 2026 in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Building on her PhD research, Hanane’s work focuses on uncovering the molecular pathways driving human atherosclerosis, the build-up of fatty material in the inner artery walls. Using advanced technologies, she’s working to better understand how this disease develops and progresses. On behalf of the Perkins and The Kids Research Institute Australia, we'd like to thank Perth's cancer research community for making the Inaugural West Coast Cancer Meeting such a success.    Researchers and clinicians in adult and paediatric cancer research came together to discuss the latest advances in research, some promising preliminary results (yet to be published), and some of the big issues facing researchers. Funding, which underpins so much of the work being done, was a hot topic, and the input and interest from the group was insightful and will hopefully form a solid basis upon which we can strive for increased funding for cancer researchers in WA.   And our thanks to the Perkins CEO Prof Peter Leedman AO for his comprehensive update on the progress of the business case for the Perkins WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre. The Inaugural West Coast Cancer Meeting 2025 kicked off in Perth this morning. The Perkins is delighted to co-host the event with The Kids Research Institute Australia, and provide a forum for WA's cancer research community to gather and share their amazing work in the battle against cancer. Attendees will hear from a range of student, EMCR and leading researchers presenting their latest findings on adult and paediatric cancer, with the aim to foster more and stronger collaboration, to generate ideas that will lead to increased grant funding for WA cancer research, and to set a foundation for more regular forums like this where ideas and achievements can be shared and celebrated. The Perkins CEO Prof Peter Leedman AO will be updating the audience after lunch about the Perkins WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre project. The Perkins team checking in from the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) Convention 2025 in Canberra this week, catching up on latest opportunities coming for the sector, and the many challenges we're facing, not least of all funding. Our CEO Prof Peter Leedman AO was joined by Perkins Chair, Hon Ben Morton, Deputy Director Prof Moira Clay and COO ‎‎Peter Dolnik‎‎ MBA MPhil GAICD. They were also excited to share the Perkins vision for a truly comprehensive cancer centre for Western Australia - bringing new opportunities for cancer research and care for patients together under one roof in the proposed WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

It was a big night for WA innovators at last night's 2025 Prime Minister's Prizes for Science. Congratulations to Perkins alumni Dr Nikhilesh Bappoo on being awarded the 2025 Prize for Innovators. Nik was recognised for two novel and accessible medical technologies - VeinTech and lubdub.ai. These two innovations will bring great improvements to health care worldwide.  And we also congratulate Professor Michael Wear, who was awarded the 2025 Prime Minister’s Prize for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge Systems. Prof Wear is recognised for building a free-market enterprise that promotes environmental stewardship and helps younger generations connect with their cultural heritage. At the Perkins, we have been working with Michael and the team at Tidal Moon Sea Cucumbers to explore the potential cancer-fighting properties of sea cucumbers that could lead to nature-based treatments through our Biota program. Prof Alexey V. Terskikh, Group Leader of the Chromatic and Ageing lab at the Perkins, together with Dr Mathias Francois Professor of DEvelopmental Genetics at University of Sydney, invite you to join the 2025 Single Molecule and Chromatin Meeting on November 27-28 at the historic Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle (south of Perth), Western Australia. The Meeting will focus on sharing and discussing unpublished groundbreaking ideas, out-of-the-box approaches and state-of-the-art technologies that enable the detection and investigation of single molecules in live cells. Topics will include innovative imaging approaches to study chromatin structure and function, cell identity, cell state and function at the single-cell level, with applications in areas such as immune cell activation and biological ageing. The afternoon of the first day will include a poster session with refreshments and drinks to facilitate networking and idea exchange. This event will bring together Australian researchers from the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Monash University, WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research), Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, University of Adelaide, Children's Medical Research Institute, UNSW, La Trobe University, The Australian National University, The University of Queensland, The University of Western Australia and international researchers from Kyushu University to establish a global collaborative network in the rapidly growing field of single-molecule and chromatin biology.
