  • ✨ Celebrating Our Incredible Volunteers ✨ It was a joy to welcome so many of our fabulous volunteers to the annual Volunteer Thank You Sundowner on Friday afternoon. Their dedication and generosity are vitally important to the Medical School — from UWA alumni and clinical and research adjuncts to our simulated patients, each plays a vital role in shaping the future of our students. The event was filled with laughter, connection, and great music from the talented Medical School student band 🎶. We were inspired by Prisha Goel, incoming President of WAMSS, who shared how volunteers have profoundly impacted her journey through medical school and enriched her path to becoming a doctor. We also heard from Dean Dr Helen Wilcox, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the time, energy, and wisdom our volunteers bring to the Medical School community. Your dedication and impact make this place truly exceptional — thank you! 'Helen Wilcox 'Prisha Goel 'Western Australian Medical Students' Society (WAMSS)

  • 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀! Western Australia’s three medical schools, Curtin University, The University of Notre Dame Australia and The University of Western Australia, have partnered to learn more about community thoughts on the way we choose our future doctors. Our schools strive to graduate doctors who can support patients from all walks of life. This starts at student selection, where we use different tools (grades, test scores, interviews, etc.) to find the people who have the skills and values that make a “good doctor”. We want to hear from you about how these processes can best represent our community, and make sure they align with our shared community values and expectations. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘆? You’re invited to share your thoughts in our survey, which asks about you, your values, and your opinions on medical school selection processes. The survey is expected to take 20-40 minutes, and can be completed on your phone, tablet or computer. Your answers will be anonymous. At the end of the survey, you will be directed to a separate form, where you can express interest in ongoing discussion about medical student selection, and provide contact details to go in the running to win one of ten $80 gift cards. You can find the survey and more details here: https://lnkd.in/gR-6YFXZ 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗻 $𝟴𝟬 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀. President WAMSS | Medical Student at the University of Western Australia

So great to launch this initiative with the Western Australian Medical Students' Society (WAMSS) and MDA National, "Off the Record, Real Careers in Medicine," which was an idea that grew from discussions with colleagues and mentors alike around medical careers and specialty training. I gathered 6 graduates from The University of Western Australia and our very own UWA Medical School who have gone onto various leadership roles in health, including directorship, executive leadership and health-tech. We discussed topics such as training pathways, what really matters in a career in medicine and ways students can optimise their time on placement if they already have a knack for a specialty. Thank you to Emmeline Lee, Kevin Hartley, Dr Jamie Chew, Dr Dror Maor, Andrew Wesseldine and Dr Narelle Hadlow for volunteering your time at this event. And of course Janice Lawrence from MDA. I enjoyed MC'ing the evening and the discussions were insightful, impactful and above all, relatable. Feedback from the event has been overwhelmingly positive, and I am so glad to have gotten this off the ground. Thank you to my dear friend Shev Dias for also speaking to your experience with placement, research, conferences, and balancing it all. No doubt a fine role model for those present. It made me proud to be a student of this institution when we had such a spectacular and diverse range of expertise coming right out of this university. The best part of the evening for me was witnessing a beautiful display of collegiality of future and current colleagues.... turns out it wasn't just for the students, but also for our guests to reconnect and arrange a few coffee catch-ups of their own!
