Another great session in the Australian Pavilion giving the stage and microphone to amplify Pacific voices. A strong focus on how to leverage Australia’s COP31 presidency. The Pacific has long provided the clarion call for ambitious mitigation action, and it’s more urgently needed than ever. Key takeaways: - raising up Pacific voices is an important priority for Australia in climate talks and other forums - Chris Bowen MP - Pacific Leaders’ number one priority in the talks is “keeping 1.5 alive” - Maina Vakafua Talia - The Pacific is ready to welcome world leaders to better appreciate the travel required to participate, and visit an atoll to understand life on a beach with oceans on both sides - Tina Stege - The Pacific Resilience Fund is a Pacific conceived, designed, led and owned solution that the world should back in, and keeping it simple is complicated! - Finau Soqo Thanks to the panel for these great insights, well chaired by Will Nankervis. • Good news: the ARENA-backed 'AEMO Accelerating the Engineering Roadmap' project delivered by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is now successfully complete! The Engineering Roadmap is AEMO’s framework to identify and prioritise the actions needed to securely operate the grid during the energy transition. Key achievements for the project: - Fast-tracked critical actions to help the National Energy Market (NEM) operate safely with higher levels of renewables. - Stronger technical foundations like grid-forming inverter capabilities, better integration of distributed energy resources (DER) and consumer energy resources (CER), and improved data and visibility. - Greater operational readiness, giving AEMO better tools and procedures to manage changing system conditions. - Clearer signals for industry investment. These outcomes support both the NEM and Western Australia’s South-West Interconnected System (SWIS) and help to prepare Australia’s electricity systems as renewables continue to scale. Congratulations to AEMO and all partners involved. We’re proud to support this important work. • We’re entering a new phase of the clean energy transition: one where grid-forming batteries are no longer experimental, but essential. With 5 ARENA-funded grid-forming (GFM) batteries already operating in the National Energy Market, and more on the way, these projects are proving that advanced inverters can deliver the system strength needed for Australia’s energy future. Key lessons, challenges and breakthroughs from this journey are captured in our blog, drawing on insights from the 2 latest ARENA-commissioned Ekistica reports. These reports provide a clear picture of how GFM batteries shifted from pilot projects to industry default, and what this means for the next generation of large-scale storage. The insights are shaping not just Australia’s transition, but how advanced power systems around the world will operate in the decade ahead. If you’re interested in the next chapter of grid stability, renewable integration or the evolution of advanced inverters, this is essential reading. Another huge few days at #COP30. Minister Bowen is here, which means #COP31 hosting discussions are ramping up. Every meeting I have is peppered with questions and well-wishes for our bid. Yesterday, Minister Bowen delivered Australia's National Statement, where he mentioned how important COP31 was to our Pacific neighbours, to extended applause. There is a lot of support on the ground here for the joint bid. Ruby Heard has departed and Christopher Faris has joined me, flying the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) flag until Friday. Highlights and insights from the last few days include: ☀️Joining Global Solar Council (GSC) and IRENA's panel, "Solar + Storage. Energy Secured" on how solar + storage is a key unlock for energy security, as well as decarb and lower electricity. ARENA's ultra-low cost solar priority, our V2X and other DER work is relevant here, but I also made the point that if we're talking about energy security in Australia, we need to be talking about the work we're doing on regional microgrids and the broader issue of energy poverty for remote First Nations communities. 🚛 Joining Drive to Zero’s "Powered by Renewables: Zero-Emission Freight Corridors for a Global Transition" panel where NewVolt announced kick off work on the Hume Highway green corridor for heavy vehicles. I made the point that Australian road freight sector is dominated by SMEs (98%!), so our work in this space needs to start with bringing those owner-operators along on the journey. That's why is great to see industry leading on this early work. 📈Joining BCG's exec roundtable on the green economy, ahead of a joint report coming in December. Some powerful indicators that the #greeneconomy opportunity is second only to the tech sector globally and that on average, green revenues are growing 2x compared to conventional revenues. ✈️ Chris Faris MCing DCCEEW's Green Metals Forum and going straight into Jet Zero's SAF panel (with Anna Hancock) on next to no sleep after some flight delays. Champion! 🏭On #greenmetals, there is strong appetite and from APAC countries to work with Australia on the green metals supply chain. Li Shou from NYC's Asia Society put it well when he urged policymakers to think about China (and I would add others in the region) as investors, not buyers. Offtake will come from partnerships. 💚 The incredible Tishiko King hosted a cross-cultural Pacific First Nations event at the pavilion the other night that reminded us why we're doing this work, and how to engage with First Nations ways of connecting. 🌞Also, shoutout to Global Solar Council for their 10th anniversary event, which was a genuine celebration of the global impact of solar PV.Sonia Dunlop reminded us that the top seven #solarPV companies are now generating more energy than the top seven oil and gas companies. That's not a new stat, but for it to happen in a short amount of time shows there's no turning the #netzero ship around

  • We’re supporting Aussie battery production with over $7.8m for Li-S Energy to help accelerate lithium-sulfur battery manufacturing. This funding supports a feasibility study and front end engineering design for a proposed Brisbane facility targeting up to 1 GWh of battery cell production each year – more than 500 times the capacity of Li-S Energy’s current site in Geelong. Lithium-sulfur batteries have the potential to deliver up to twice the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Why does this matter? Batteries are essential to the clean energy transition, powering everything from renewable energy storage to electric vehicles and drones. By backing innovation in lithium-sulfur technology, we’re helping to deliver lighter and longer-lasting batteries and build local manufacturing capability. A huge first few days at COP30 in Belem, with the urgency of the climate crisis impossible to ignore, here at the edge of the Amazon. I'm here for the full two weeks, joined in week one by Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) Board member Ruby Heard and in week two by ARENA's COO, Christopher Faris. Days are full of panels, bilats, opportune conversations, and lots of questions about who will host COP31. Catch me tomorrow (Friday) speaking on the panel for CALSTART’s "Powered by Renewables: Zero-Emission Freight Corridors for a Global Transition, 16:00 – 17:00, We Mean Business Pavilion, Blue Zone, and then Saturday for Global Solar Council (GSC)’s "Solar. Storage. Energy Secured. How is solar plus storage critical to achieving energy security?" 15:00-16:15, Global Renewables Hub. Key takeaways thus far: 👣The global movement of First Nations leadership is growing, amplified here in Brazil. The Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Pacific voices here are loud and speak with great clarity: what we're doing isn't working. Systems change is required. As Barbara Ibuai put it on "The Answer is Us" panel yesterday: at some point in our histories, our bloodline reaches back to a First Nations ancestor, If that ancestor was talking to a First Nations person today, the message would be the same: protect country. ☀️Global push for the rooftop revolution (300 million rooftops by 2030!) equals huge opportunities for households, for decarb and plenty of challenges for the grid, and to ensure all that rooftop PV is complemented by storage. Ruby was on Boston Consulting Group (BCG)’s DER panel yesterday with the CCA's Matt Kean, CEFC's Paul McCartney and Zoisa North-Bond from Octopus Energy. Ruby reminded us all that V2X presents a huge opportunity to soak up all that solar (By 2050, utilising just 10% of expected V2X capacity could provide more than 1/3 of NEM's storage needs). 💰Matt Kean also made the point that Australia is a great place to invest, given the policy certainty that comes with a secure government committed to net zero (and some further points on other policy positions recently announced). 🏭Strong desire to for coordinated work in the APAC region for green metals. More on that next week. 🔋Did you know Solar Citizens staged a wedding for their solar panel and battery mascots the day the Minister announced the Cheaper Home Batteries Program? Now you do! (pic attached as proof) 🇺🇸Also, spotted Gavin Newsom being mugged like a rockstar, wandering through the Blue Zone with no US pavilion to visit. #COP31
