Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs) are a way for companies to purchase renewable energy even when their assets are not located near wind or solar farms. They’re one of the tools companies can use to reduce emissions, and a way for us to work towards a net zero future for everyone. We’ve just signed a 15-year VPPA with Terra-Gen, LLC to purchase 78.5 MW of renewable energy from the newly completed Monte Cristo Wind Project in Texas, in the US. Find out more about the new agreement: https://lnkd.in/eceEkf28 #FindingBetterWays #EmissionsReduction

Moussa is dedicated to conserving cultural heritage at our Simandou project. He works closely with local communities and conservation partners to preserve the deep connection that Guinean communities share with the land, water, forests and spirits at Simandou. "Simandou is not just about mining or transporting ore. There are sacred places and artefacts here that need to be left intact, and communities that we are committed to respecting," Moussa said. "And that’s why we must protect this land and its heritage. For our communities, for Guinea, and for the generations yet to come.”

"After 35 years at the aluminium plant in Straumsvík (Iceland), I still look forward to coming to work every day." Sigurður Egill leads Casthouse Production Planning at our ISAL aluminium smelter in Iceland. The casthouse produces high-quality aluminium billets from liquid metal. Every year, ISAL hires around 130 summer employees. Many later go on to build long careers at the smelter — and Sigurður Egill is one of those people. He first joined at 18 years old for a summer on the shop floor, and 35 years later he's still here. In 1998, Sigurður Egill became part of the very first cohort of the ISAL School. "The ISAL School is extremely important for us," he says. "It strengthens collaboration within the company, breaks down barriers between departments, and helps students understand the aluminium production process from every perspective." That spirit of learning and growth is reflected across ISAL. Two employees have reached 50 years of service at the 56-year-old plant. "My colleagues are a big part of why I enjoy my work," Sigurður Egill says, "but also the mindset of continuous improvement that's embedded in our culture." Continuous improvement also drives ISAL's focus. The smelter produces aluminium with one of the lowest CO₂ footprints in the world. It's a source of great pride for Sigurður Egill. "Most of our improvement projects focus on safety, employee health, the environment and, of course, quality." Even in a leadership role, Sigurður Egill stays close to the people who make those improvements possible. "I make it a priority to meet employees on the shop floor every day," he says. "The best ideas for improvements usually come from there, and it's very important to listen, review ideas carefully and implement those that are feasible." In 2019, Sigurður Egill's commitment was recognised when he received the Icelandic Stjórnvísi management award for his journey at ISAL, presented by President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson. #FindingBetterWays #ISAL

We’re investing more than A$35 million in a green iron demonstration plant in Kwinana, south of Perth – a key step towards a lower-emissions steel future.   Through our agreement with Calix Limited, we’ll support the Zesty™ (Zero Emissions Steel Technology) project, which could make it possible to use Pilbara iron ore to produce steel with lower emissions.   The Zesty demonstration plant is planned to be built at the Kwinana site originally planned for our BioIron™ pilot plant.   We’ve paused work on the BioIron plant while we resolve emerging technical and design challenges. We remain committed to the potential of BioIron technology, and R&D is continuing in partnership with the University of Nottingham and sustainable technology company, Metso.

Operations have begun at the Simandou project in Guinea in West Africa. Simandou is the largest greenfield mining and related infrastructure project in Africa, strengthening our global iron ore portfolio. The project is delivering: 🚂more than 600 kilometres of new multi-use rail lines 🚢 barge and Transhipment Vessel port facilities. Once fully operational, this infrastructure will support up to 120 million tonnes of high grade iron ore exports each year. The first loads of ore have already been taken from the mine to the port on the new rail line. This project is one of partnership, being co-developed by the Government of the Republic of Guinea, SimFer (us and Chinalco) and WCS. What goes into the mining process to produce the materials the world needs? Starting, operating and closing a mine is a complex process that involves much more than the actual 'start' of mining. It can take years – sometimes decades – before a single ounce of metal or mineral is pulled from the ground. Taking the time to mine the right way – safely, sustainably and in partnership with communities – can ensure mining continues to responsibly deliver value for generations to come. Find out how long it takes to start a mine 👉 https://lnkd.in/eaePRqMC #FindingBetterWays
