Sampling and quantization are used to convert a continuous image into digital form. This involves two processes: sampling, which converts the continuous spatial coordinates into discrete sample values, and quantization, which converts the continuous amplitude/intensity values into discrete levels. For sampling, samples are taken at regular intervals along the x- and y-axes. For quantization, the continuous intensity range is divided into a finite number of discrete intervals, and each sample is assigned one of the interval values based on its intensity. Performing this process over the entire image results in a discrete, two-dimensional digital image.
