RECENT APPLICATIONS OF DFLOW-FM TO RIVERINE ENVIRONMENT

Next Generation River Modelling – 2015
• TECHNITAL S.p.A. is an Italian Engineering Company mainly working in
Hydraulic, Marine, Environmental and Transport fields
• The cooperation with Deltares started when it was still Delft Hydraulics,
more or less in 90’s years
• Many specialized studies have been developed together: the
hydrodynamic, ecological and morphological studies and models of the
Venice Lagoon (Italy) in relation with the MOSE project, the international
Gran Port of Al Faw (Iraq), the interventions for the protection of the coast
of Batumi (Georgia), etc.
• In 2013 Deltares asked to Technital S.p.A. to participate to Beta Test
activities of the DFlow-FM model, at that time under development. To test
the possibilities of the new model, both under an hydrodynamic and water
quality point of view, Technital applied the Dflow-FM model of the Lagoon
of Venice, which results were presented at Deltares Software Days in
2013 (hydrodynamic) and 2014 (Water Quality)
• Since then, Technital S.p.A., in agreement with Deltares, is applying
DFlow-FM model to other projects, including in the riverine environment
• In this presentation, some of the most significant recent applications
(some under development) is reported

LOWER STRETCH OF TAGLIAMENTO RIVER: FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS
• The preliminary design phase is concluded
• In the next phase, further analyses are foreseen, including the
morphological model of the Baseleghe Lagoon to verify the effects
of the fluxes discharged by Cavrato during the Tagliamento river
floods.

THE PADUA – VENICE WATERWAY
The Venice Padua waterway is a project developed in 1970s and realised in part. Works were interrupted and the
aim of the present project is to update it to the class V-a.
Besides the waterway should:
• Operate as floodway during Brenta river’s maximum fluxes (typically during Autumn and Spring seasons)
• Allow to increase fresh water discharges into the Venice Lagoon (rivers diversed during 14th-15th centuries)

PADUA-VENICE WATERWAY: FUTURE ACTIVITIES
• Survey campaigns to better define the loads (water and
sediments) coming from the Brenta river
• Focus on water/sediment quality
• WAQ issues need long term analysis
• Aggregation of the existing model (if possible…) or
• New hydro model
• less horizontal resolution
• 3D effects investigation
• Structures + RTC-Tools
• Management of the locks and by-pass channels
• Management of closures of mobile gates of the inlets
during flooding events
