Which was more enjoyable
      as a viewer?
         Why?
Editing is (arguably) the most important part
of the film-making process.

A good editor can save a bad movie.

A bad editor can ruin a great film.
What do we mean by editing?
What do we mean by editing?

“The careful selection and
arrangement of material to
 form a coherent whole.”
What do we mean by editing?

- Pick the parts that we want.

- Discard the parts we don’t
  want.

- Put it in an order (or sequence)
that tells the story we choose.
What does editing involve?
- Deciding what shots to include
- Setting the duration of each shot
- Placing the shots in sequence, to create
  meaning in the audiences mind
- Fixing / hiding deficiencies from the
  production process
- Adjusting, adding & altering audio
- Adjusting, adding & altering video effects
But….

  Why do we edit?

That martial arts film on YouTube was sick, right?
Create & develop drama

                                      Create motivation
  Create pace & show emotion

                Why do we edit?
                                           Tell a story
Create atmosphere

                                    Engage our audience
Combine shots into a sequence
We edit to create meaning, to add structure
and sense to our stories.

Editing doesn’t just mean logging and
capturing and cutting, there’s so much more
to it than that…..
The way we cut together the shots will help
to create mood, tension, meaning,
motivation…..

It can suggest spatial and time relationships
for the audience….
For example
Continuity editing (or classical editing) is a
style of cutting together footage that creates
a clear and logical narrative flow for the
audience by creating realistic time and
spatial relationships.
