Railway board vide letter No. 2018/W-
I/RVNL/Ranaghat/Jheel Siding dated
13.06.2018 had transferred two projects
namely “Infrastructure development of
Jheel Siding Coaching Depot at Howrah”
and “15 Coach Maintenance facility at
EMU Car Shed Ranaghat” for execution
in fast track manner. Both the projects
are in existing functional depot and
required augmentation and modification
to meet the present need of maintenance
facilities.
The Old Jheel Siding Depot, Howrah is
having maintenance facility of trains of 10-
12 coach length only and maintenance is
being done in shallow pit line without any
catwalk and with no facilities for lifting
of coaches by cranes. RVNL project will
facilitate the maintenance of coaches
in more convenient and faster way by
use of highly modernized equipment.
The project has been bifurcated in two
phases, Phase-I and Phase-II works.
After completion of the project the depot
is able to maintain rakes of 20 coach
length under all-weather 425 m long shed
having three tier maintenance facility,
dedicated washing line and heavy repair
shed with EOT cranes.
Similarly, the old EMU Car Shed,
Ranaghat is having maintenance facility
of trains of 12 coach length only and
maintenance is being done in two
tier system without roof maintenance
facilities. After completion of the project
the depot will be able to maintain rakes of
15 coach length under all-weather 350 m
long shed having three tier maintenance
facility, dedicated Automatic Train Wash
Plant, proper lighting arrangement,
washing lines for 15 coach maintenance
and parking bay.

The existing depot is having maintenance facility of trains of 10-12 coach length only and
maintenance is being done in shallow pit line without any catwalk and with no facilities for
lifting of coaches by cranes. The work was transferred to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) in
June, 2018 and the contract was awarded in July, 2019 by RVNL. This project will facilitate
the maintenance of coaches in more convenient and faster way by use of highly modernized
equipment. On completion of the project the depot is able to maintain rakes of 20 coach length
under all-weather 425 m long shed having three tier maintenance facility, dedicated washing
line and crane, Heavy repair shed of 100 m length of 6 coach holding and maintenance facility
having EOT.

Dismantling of Abandoned Building and Structure

CHALLENGES AND INNOVATIVE IDEA
ADOPTED
The work was physically taken up only on 05.12.2019 after clearance of obstructions in the form
of encroachments, cables, pipelines, buildings, trees and tracks. About 6 to 8 cattle owners with
approx. 110 nos cattle were settled as encroachers and also, construction raw materials like stone
chips were stacked at various location in entier project area. RVNL had to take up the matter with
Railways to sort out and clear the project area.
Two no’s 11KV HT Cables were crossing through the project site and affected the work of
administrative building, Electric substation and the HR shed. The cables could be diverted by 2020.
An OFC cable was infringing the HR shed work. The micro tunnelling was done 2.5 m below the
existing ground level and the work completed within the agreed target of 03.08.2020.
A 300 mm diameter drinking water pipe line and a 500 mm diameter under-construction drinking
water pipe crossed through the project site affecting the work of Heavy Repair Shed and
administrative building.
There were 6 nos lines in Punjab line yard area which were hindrance for Phase-1 work of the
projects. 3500 TrM length was under the earth. All these had been done for creating site for
construction of the HR shed, Administrative Building, Electric Substation, Parking Shed and road.
15 nos OHE masts along line nos 7  8 were infringing the construction of 3 washing lines. The
OHE masts were dismantled on 30.12.2019  13.01.2020 and the work of washing lines - 6, 7 and
8 was started.

Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP): Drain grating used which is easy to handle and

Used polymer instead of bentonite for the construction of bored piles, as polymer offers
many operational and environmental benefits.
The project was executed in a water logged area resulting in different challenges
time to time. To overcome the challenges different ecofriendly methods followed
during green field project were applied to maintain quality at site.
	
Water proofing treatment: As inspection shed is constructed in a water logged
area there is possibility of ground water penetrating in to the Inspection shed
through expansion joint location. Expansion joint treated with Expoband (300mm
X2mm) to counter the inflow of water.
	
Scrap PSC sleepers used for construction of road besides inspection shed. This
has helped to reduce hazards for stacking of PSC sleepers as well as reduced
concrete consumption. This is also a step towards environment protection.
	
Use of fly ash brick: Clay bricks are made of clay which is collected from fertile
land or the top soil. Fly ash brick reduces the carbon foot print and adds green
points.
	
Precast pits were made outside on the surface to connect Box Drains with hume
pipe.

The ingenious facility developed at the EMU Crashed Ranaghat, which makes the work to look like a state-of-the-
art facility is setting up of Automatic Train washing plant. The Automatic Drive through Train Washing plant has been
designed both for EMU and MEMU coaches, first of its kind on Indian Railways for washing both EMU and MEMU
coaches. Due to introduction of ETP and RO system water consumption for washing has been reduced in addition
of reduction in manpower. The setting up of Automatic Coach Washing Plant is worthwhile step towards environment
friendly construction measures as it helps in reduction in water consumption upto 70% through recycling of water.
Key features of Automatic coach washing plant is as below.
When the train enters in to the washing plant at a speed of 5-8 KMPH coaches are washed from outside without
manual intervention. As MEMU train or EMU Train enters, the plant sensor senses and the specific defined brushes
start and pumps start automatically. If the Train speed is set in PLC and if it is more than the speed set up in PLC,
plant will stop automatically.

    Railway board videletter No. 2018/W- I/RVNL/Ranaghat/Jheel Siding dated 13.06.2018 had transferred two projects namely “Infrastructure development of Jheel Siding Coaching Depot at Howrah” and “15 Coach Maintenance facility at EMU Car Shed Ranaghat” for execution in fast track manner. Both the projects are in existing functional depot and required augmentation and modification to meet the present need of maintenance facilities. The Old Jheel Siding Depot, Howrah is having maintenance facility of trains of 10- 12 coach length only and maintenance is being done in shallow pit line without any catwalk and with no facilities for lifting of coaches by cranes. RVNL project will facilitate the maintenance of coaches in more convenient and faster way by use of highly modernized equipment. The project has been bifurcated in two phases, Phase-I and Phase-II works. After completion of the project the depot is able to maintain rakes of 20 coach length under all-weather 425 m long shed having three tier maintenance facility, dedicated washing line and heavy repair shed with EOT cranes. Similarly, the old EMU Car Shed, Ranaghat is having maintenance facility of trains of 12 coach length only and maintenance is being done in two tier system without roof maintenance facilities. After completion of the project the depot will be able to maintain rakes of 15 coach length under all-weather 350 m long shed having three tier maintenance facility, dedicated Automatic Train Wash Plant, proper lighting arrangement, washing lines for 15 coach maintenance and parking bay.     CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED NON AVAILABILITY OFSITE Dismantling of Abandoned Building and Structure Water Logging at Site CHALLENGES AND INNOVATIVE IDEA ADOPTED The work was physically taken up only on 05.12.2019 after clearance of obstructions in the form of encroachments, cables, pipelines, buildings, trees and tracks. About 6 to 8 cattle owners with approx. 110 nos cattle were settled as encroachers and also, construction raw materials like stone chips were stacked at various location in entier project area. RVNL had to take up the matter with Railways to sort out and clear the project area. Two no’s 11KV HT Cables were crossing through the project site and affected the work of administrative building, Electric substation and the HR shed. The cables could be diverted by 2020. An OFC cable was infringing the HR shed work. The micro tunnelling was done 2.5 m below the existing ground level and the work completed within the agreed target of 03.08.2020. A 300 mm diameter drinking water pipe line and a 500 mm diameter under-construction drinking water pipe crossed through the project site affecting the work of Heavy Repair Shed and administrative building. There were 6 nos lines in Punjab line yard area which were hindrance for Phase-1 work of the projects. 3500 TrM length was under the earth. All these had been done for creating site for construction of the HR shed, Administrative Building, Electric Substation, Parking Shed and road. 15 nos OHE masts along line nos 7 8 were infringing the construction of 3 washing lines. The OHE masts were dismantled on 30.12.2019 13.01.2020 and the work of washing lines - 6, 7 and 8 was started. Major Machinery and Plants  EOT cranes: 2 nos 30/10T Electric Overhead Cranes had been provided in the Lifting bay for lifting of Coach.  500 CFM Air Compressor has been provided in Shed with Auto Dryer features and connected in loop for facilitating air lines in the Shed.  Pneumatic pipelines with FRL, Auto drain valve, Pneumatic Gun QRC have been provided at every alternate column (i.e. at 20 m spacing) to facilitate air testing, cleaning, operation of pneumatic tools etc. in the sheds.  Platform truck and Articulated Forklift have been provided for material movement and in-situ changing of components.  Portable Welding Plants have been provided with sockets for requirement of welding in inspection bay as well as in Lifting Bay. The project was executed in a water logged area resulting in different challenges time to time. To overcome the challenges different ecofriendly methods followed during green field project were applied to maintain quality at site.  Water proofing treatment: As inspection shed is constructed in a water logged area there is possibility of ground water penetrating in to the Inspection shed through expansion joint location. Expansion joint treated with Expoband (300mm X2mm) to counter the inflow of water.  Scrap PSC sleepers used for construction of road besides inspection shed. This has helped to reduce hazards for stacking of PSC sleepers as well as reduced concrete consumption. This is also a step towards environment protection.  Use of fly ash brick: Clay bricks are made of clay which is collected from fertile land or the top soil. Fly ash brick reduces the carbon foot print and adds green points.  Precast pits were made outside on the surface to connect Box Drains with hume pipe. The Automatic Drive through Train Washing plant has been designed both for EMU and MEMU coaches, first of its kind on Indian Railways for washing both EMU and MEMU coaches. Due to introduction of ETP and RO system water consumption for washing has been reduced in addition of reduction in manpower. The setting up of Automatic Coach Washing Plant is worthwhile step towards environment friendly construction measures as it helps in reduction in water consumption upto 70% through recycling of water. Key features of Automatic coach washing plant is as below. When the train enters in to the washing plant at a speed of 5-8 KMPH coaches are washed from outside without manual intervention. As MEMU train or EMU Train enters, the plant sensor senses and the specific defined brushes start and pumps start automatically. If the Train speed is set in PLC and if it is more than the speed set up in PLC, plant will stop automatically.
