In 2026, the UN will review the human rights record of Solomon Islands under its Universal Periodic Review. We wanted to make sure this review is informed by the stories of local Solomon Islanders who are gay, trans and gender diverse. We worked with local activists, ILGA Oceania and Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation to document the experience of our communities in Solomon Islands. We’re pleased to share the resulting report. https://lnkd.in/gq6T4rDx

Yesterday we were honoured to join Olympic legend Ian Thorpe AM at Parliament House in Canberra to urge federal politicians to reject fear-mongering and misinformation. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Parliamentary Friends of LGBTIQ+ Australians for the 48th parliament, Thorpe gave an impassioned plea to protect young LGBTIQ+ people from hateful attitudes and toxic public debates that have recently engulfed media and politics. Thank you to all who attended and a special congratulations to our incoming Co-Chairs Sharon Claydon, Nick McKim, Leon Rebello MP and Allegra Spender. It was pleasing to see the strength of support for our communities across the parliament, and to have the opportunity to outline key priorities for LGBTIQ+ people. It's time to unite to end discrimination and hate once and for all. #Equality #LGBTIQ #ThorpeyforEquality

The mother of a trans teenager has won her case against the state government in Brisbane’s Supreme Court. Judge Peter Callaghan on Tuesday found the state government’s ban on puberty blockers and hormone treatments for trans young people was unlawful. He ruled the decision to issue the directive should be set aside. We hope young trans people in Queensland will soon be able to access the evidence-based, safe and effective care they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives. Every young person in Queensland should be able access health care without political interference. Sending our love to LGBTI Legal Service Inc., the brave mother and all our community supporting this case in Queensland and from around the country 🏳️⚧️ #trans #LGBT #LGBTIQ+ #equality #queensland #gender

Queensland's ban on puberty blockers and hormone therapy is being challenged by the mother of a trans teenager. Brisbane’s Supreme Court yesterday heard the state government acted unlawfully and failed to follow proper procedures when it implemented the ban earlier this year. The court was also told that care had been paused in the absence of any clinical evidence, consideration for the number of young people affected or the potentially devastating psychological affects it could have on them. ‘Consultation' amounted to a 22-minute Teams call, which was held at the same time the ban was announced publicly, the court was told. The legality of the puberty block ban will now be determined by Justice Peter Callaghan as soon as next week. All young people, including trans kids, deserve access to the health care they need - without interference from politicians. #transrights #trans #LGBTIQ+ #Equality #queensland

Earlier this week, NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro suggested that trans women should be banned being placed in women’s prisons, regardless of the circumstances. Along with community groups and human rights advocates, NT Commissioner Jeswynn Yogaratnam has raised serious concerns that making blanket rules that could see Sistergirls placed in men’s prison could expose the government to “legal liability”. He described Ms Finocchiaro’s approach as “alarmist (and) unsupported by evidence from the NT” and said it risked “inflaming prejudice and hostility toward trans Territorians". All trans people deserve dignity, safety and respect. We stand in solidarity with Sistergirls and trans women in the NT. #Transrightsarehumanrights #trans #equality

🚨 Only a few hours left to Fund the Fight for Equality 🚨 This year, we’ve seen a disturbing rise in hate speech, threats and violence against LGBTIQ+ people. Religious schools still have a license to discriminate against our communities and trans and gender diverse people are increasingly the targets of public attacks. At Equality Australia, we’re fighting back - changing laws and changing lives. But we can’t do it without you. Help protect our communities and support our fight for legal and social change.
