Yesterday we were honoured to join Olympic legend Ian Thorpe AM at Parliament House in Canberra to urge federal politicians to reject fear-mongering and misinformation. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Parliamentary Friends of LGBTIQ+ Australians for the 48th parliament, Thorpe gave an impassioned plea to protect young LGBTIQ+ people from hateful attitudes and toxic public debates that have recently engulfed media and politics. Thank you to all who attended and a special congratulations to our incoming Co-Chairs Sharon Claydon, Nick McKim, Leon Rebello MP and Allegra Spender. It was pleasing to see the strength of support for our communities across the parliament, and to have the opportunity to outline key priorities for LGBTIQ+ people. It's time to unite to end discrimination and hate once and for all. #Equality #LGBTIQ #ThorpeyforEquality
Such a powerful moment of unity and courage. 🌈👏 Thank you, Equality Australia, for continuing to amplify compassion over fear and facts over misinformation. Ian Thorpe’s message is a vital reminder that inclusion and dignity for LGBTIQ+ people are not up for debate — they are fundamental human rights. Building a culture of respect requires leadership, empathy, and the unwavering belief that equality strengthens us all. 🏳️🌈🤝
