We are proud to share that two Airservices colleagues have been recognised at the Melbourne Airport Excellence Awards 2025. Nicole Carrington-Sima, our Queensland-based External Communications Specialist, won the Excellence in Teamwork and Collaboration Award for her outstanding contribution to the Airport 24/7 documentary series. This major project provided unprecedented behind the scenes access to Melbourne Tower, the Air Traffic Control operations room and our Aviation Rescue Fire Fighter (ARFF) Melbourne training grounds and station. Nicole's efforts helped showcase the critical role Airservices plays in aviation safety and supported our ongoing ATC recruitment. The series premiered on Network Ten in June and is now airing globally on National Geographic UK. We also acknowledge Fire Commander Damien Cerni from ARFF Melbourne, who was recognised as a finalist for the Mark Storti Award for Safety. His nomination reflects a distinguished 30-year ARFF career and his unwavering commitment to protecting travellers and the airport community. Damien also appeared in Airport 24/7, giving viewers a glimpse into the vital work of our ARFF team. ✈️ Airservices Australia has released its Australian Aviation Network Overview report for October 2025 ✈️ Highlights include: ➡️ Australian aviation recorded another strong month in October, supported by major events such as the National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Final and school holidays early in the month. International travel has sustained 9% year-on-year growth, and this momentum is expected to be maintained, supported by regional trade cooperation reinforced at the recent APEC Summit. Fleet renewal is enabling greater capacity on busy domestic routes and first-ever international services from secondary airports, such as the Bali-Newcastle route with A321LR aircraft. ➡️This growth is being balanced with community and sustainability initiatives, including enhanced engagement and transparent reporting of Noise Abatement Procedures across nine metropolitan cities. ➡️Industry on-time performance remains above 2024 levels, despite weather challenges including strong crosswinds experienced at Sydney on five days. Enhanced collaborative practices from senior-level network coordination representatives in Airservices, airlines, airports and the Bureau of Meteorology are now embedded in daily operations. Passenger-centric application of Ground Delay Programs (GDPs) and proactive scenario-planning during peak demand and capacity constrained periods has resulted in a 20% reduction in ground delays year-on-year in October. ➡️With Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) now operational at three of Australia’s busiest airports, we are seeing improved network predictability and delay reduction. Since implementation, Perth’s daily departure delays have fallen by over 85%, Brisbane’s on-time performance improved by nine points, and Sydney saw smoother traffic flows during constrained operations. ➡️Air traffic service variations have reduced by 95% this month compared to October last year, reflecting sustained investment in recruitment and training. Sydney experienced staffing challenges on four days accounting for 0.3% of total delays at the airport, with Airservices impacts ranging from a fully attributable GDP on 15 October to minor ground delays. To close resilience gaps, accelerated cross-training of air traffic controllers for priority locations such as Sydney remains a key focus. Airservices Australia’s Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service team at Sydney Airport hosted NSW Ambulance and other emergency service agencies, including Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW State Emergency Service, for a large-scale emergency simulation, with an aircraft fire and 40 patients needing urgent care. Two of our brand new Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service Striker Volterra hybrid fire trucks and their crew were the first responders on scene at the Western Sydney International Airport aerodrome emergency exercise that’s happening this week. The multi-agency exercise kicked off with the arrival of the NSW Rural Fire Service 737 aircraft ‘Marie Bashir’, which marked the first jet aircraft landing at the airport. Airservices Australia is making a significant investment in people, infrastructure and technology to ensure we’ll be ready to provide primary emergency response capabilities to Western Sydney International Airport for the safety of aircrew and passengers. When the airport opens, our Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service will respond to an aircraft incident anywhere on the aerodrome within three minutes of the initial call. In full response mode, the Volterra trucks can launch from a standing start to 80 km/h in under 25 seconds and discharge more than 10,000 litres of water per minute. #WSIA #ARFF #Emergency #WesternSydney #AustralianAviation #Volterra
