This document discusses principles of data visualization and how humans process visual information. It explains that our eyes and memory work in parallel to analyze visuals, with memory playing a key role. Our working memory can only hold 3 "chunks" of information at a time. Effective visuals limit prominent chunks of information and pack meaning into each chunk. The document also discusses "preattentive attributes" like color, position and size that we immediately notice in visuals, and how we form patterns from these attributes. Gestalt principles are described which can help highlight important patterns or relationships. An example visualization is analyzed to show how it leverages these concepts.
