Networking for Introverts (Really!)
The women of Connect: Professional Women’s Network share advice on
how to work a room—even if you’re the shyest person in it.
A mentor gave me this advice: Act as the host of the event. At the
next event I greeted everyone and then introduced the people that I
had met to others. I acted as if it was my role to make everyone
Susan Rosner comfortable. It worked and I enjoyed the one-on-one
            Business and
         Executive Coach conversations!

I feel strongly that you have to find the type of networking event
that is conducive to your style. Happy hours are my worst
nightmare, but small, structured events that take place before or
Beth Buelow after a speaker or workshop—those all work for me.

A while back I changed my focus when going to networking events
from promoting myself to seeing them as an opportunities to meet at
least one new person, discover their story, and find out what I can
Jennifer Goyette learn from them. Somehow that took the pressure off.

Socializing in large groups may not work for introverts. Focusing on
meaningful one-on-one relationships with fewer people might work
better. Identify people with whom you click, and then schedule
Elena Filimonova periodic lunch or happy-hour meetings with them.

Social networks are the perfect platform for introverts! You're able
to speak freely without having to be face-to-face with someone.
And then, when you are comfortable with a connection you've
Theresa Merrill nurtured, you can take the relationship offline.

Touch base with people you know are attending a networking event
in advance, and ask them to introduce you to a few other people.
The same concept applies to online networking. Ask friends and
Helene Clark colleagues to think of a few folks they think you should meet, and
 Senior Executive in the
Foodservice Industry ask them to facilitate an introduction.

Do not dress in an understated manner. People won't see you. You
want to attract people to you so you don't have to go out and
"pounce.” Wear red. It attracts people, and when people come to
Sandy Dumont you, it eliminates stress.

For me, like going from driving peacefully on a quiet secondary
road to entering a speeding packed freeway. Once you get over the
initial panic, hold onto the wheel really tight and just remember that
Bridget Murphy you, too, know how to drive!
