• Recruiters Look For Skills, Job titles and past company THEN the story of
what you did.
• They are calling you to find out if your last job is now free….they want to get
paid by your former employer…you are the pawn
• They don’t really care so get your story straight and USE THEM.
• “Are you going to other interviews” – that is a way of them finding out where
else there are jobs
• “What are you expecting to earn” – that can also be a way of them knowing
how to pitch to your FORMER employer to offer new staff!
• “What are you looking to do” – a good way for them to find out what THEY
should be looking for when pitching back to your company, or companies
you are applying for!!!
• Add you on LinkedIn – Inmails and recruiters may add you to get to one of
your contacts (degrees of connection) AND to see you job updates….you
leave a post….they know there is now a vacant post left behind.

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Suggested roles to Weike at Brightcove James Andrews at Yahoo Chris Lunn, head of video at BBC 2m groups
  • #9 Why? Be first to access to job posts Position yourself – Recruiters and upgraded users (recruiters!) can search “those who follow company X” Position yourself - Advertisers also target based on what you like, join or follow. You are building a “social graph data point ontology” – or the collection of junctions where you intersect. You are inverse targeting.
  • #12 LinkedIn’s Search Algorithm likes connections and profile completeness 2. Keywords in certain sections rank higher. 3. Using all fields/options available to you will give you an extra advantage. 4. Keywords in the “Advice for Contacting So-And-So” section don’t rank at all. 5. Using a variety of keywords that mean the same thing will help you be found. 6. Search Trends can show you the effectiveness of your search strategies 7. SEO benefits extend beyond LinkedIn. An optimized LinkedIn profile can have far-reaching effects.
  • #13 TIP: Exchange with a friend to translate each other’s profile. Worst case, use Google Translate Appear in more “google searches”, recruiters are often abroad and therfore searching using a
  • #14 Ignore Names, Things & Descriptions go for actual skills or qualification types “Event Management” = event management software THEFORE Eventbrite, Symphony Conference Tool, Eventforce “Merchandising” = Visual Merchandising – Edexcel Think of the actual skill. You might consider using the common varient, e.g. Merchandising = Window Dressing Ultimately, your skills are the most important part of your profile alongside the job titles you list.
  • #15 The most important part of your profile. Look at other people’s profile. Look at job listings. Bring your old job titles up to modern terminoly. “Web Editor” = “Content Strategist” etc
  • #16 TIP: Exchange with a friend to translate each other’s profile. Worst case, use Google Translate Appear in more “google searches”, recruiters are often abroad and therfore searching using a
  • #17 Advertisers can target based on pretty much the same as one enters on a profile. Likewise recruiters may also search on the same line – PLUS a more refinded “find people with X endorsements…..find people with X recommendations….. Find people with X skills” – so the targeting is more functional than attributed.
  • #18 Here you can see the level of depth offered to upgraded accounts, however 4h side step to this would be to simply like groups which you believe the people you want to work for will have joined, e.g. eConsultancy, Marketing Week and so on.
  • #19 Recruiters both in agencies and in-house want to maintain a “talent Database”, so help them do that by completing a Taleo account. This allows you to apply for many jobs using one uniform application process. Akin to creating a CV. Once you have done this it is helpful to set “job alerts” for any companies you find yourself applying for a job with while using your taleo account. NB It’s free.
  • #21 Look for leadership team and use your “other” email account to ping test it. Once you don’t get a bounce, simply mail the HR or whover you are trying to contact. Remember, if you can get to a manager, there is a good chance they’d like to deal direct that have to (if there is a leaway) go via HR for everything. At least in the first instance they can do their own acid test on candidates over a coffee or whatnot before proceeding to the HR formatilies. Perhaps? Finding email format: leadership team, press and media area, or at worst the data policy on a website always has a contact, simply mail them and ask!
  • #24 Photos are important. Try to make it a recent one, and preferably not a holiday snap. Second, your photo should not be one you are using elsewhere on the net. More of that to come.
  • #25 TinyEye is a reverse image search which allows for a URL or a file upload to be used for searching the web for matches. If yo uuse the same image for everything. TInyEye will show all those places to any one who searches….and if you are not too tight on privacy, your private photos/lifestyle might be disclosed.
  • #26 Export any address book you have access too into excel and import to linkedin People don’t mind getting invited to connect or friend, it’s when it comes out of the blue that is seems weird. Invite frenemies, and anyone you have ever sat in a meeting or spoke with at work. Don’t be shy. Now is the time to harvest the contacts. You never know what or when you might need them. LinkedIn is your Rolledex!
  • #27 Take your emails from hotmail, or data input all those business cards you have been given over the course of your work. Duane Forrester searchgeek@gmail.com Shirley Ng shirleyfng@gmail.com Whitney Ladd whitney.ladd@yahoo.co.uk Nabil Mouhayar nmouhayar@gmail.com Jake Langwith jake@stonecarter.com
  • #31 LinkedIn Upgrade is not ideal for job seekers, but for those searching profiles it is very good.

  • #33 View areas of job sites without signing in Access nyt & FT without subscription
  • #34 Read once that someone sent shoe to get shoe to a company …with their details included, saying…hey, you wanna get a foot in the door! Get names of managers and bid on their name in Adwords linking to your LinkedIn Offer new contacts £5 per spelling mistake they find on your profile (gimmick so spellcheck first!)
