6) How far have your contextual studies been important in understanding the specific urban
locations and life experiences represented in the films you have studied for this topic?
Introduction
In studying City of God (Meirelles, 2002) and La Haine (Kassovitz,1995) an
understanding of context has been very important in terms of understanding
the specific urban experiences and life experiences represented in the two
films, particularly in relation to issues such as police corruption, race, social
deprivation and crime. Although it could also be argued that the personal
stories of key characters, for example those of Rocket (City of God) and
Hubert (La Haine), also play a key role.
Plan
Intro X1
Police Corruption X2 (Police shoot citizen, police keep drugs)
Race X2 (Rocket gets sacked, interrogation)
Social Deprivation and Crime X2 (Story of the apartment, Hubert kicking needle)
Personal Stories (Rocket -Ambition to be photographer Shaggy’s death, Hubert - Ambition
to be a boxer scene in burnt out gym)
Conclusion X1
Point, Example, Summary (PES)
In City of God the representation of the Brazilian police is mostly negative and reflects the
accusations of corruption that were made against them during the 1960s and 1970s. We
can see this in the film where the police accidentally shoot an innocent civilian
whilst look for the ‘Tender Trio’ who are suspected of murder at the brothel. They
cover their tracks by placing a gun in the victim's hand and firing a bullet to suggest
he was involved. The endemic police corruption that existed in Brazil under military rule
during the 1960s and 1970s is an important context in understanding the negative portrayal
of the police in City of God.
Police corruption can also be seen in La Haine although not on the same scale. The plain
clothes police in particular were accused of widespread corruption in France during the
1990s.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we can see that contextual studies play a very important role in
terms of understanding the specific urban experiences and life experiences
represented in both films, although the personal stories of key characters such
as Rocket and Hubert are also significant.
