Week 1 - Stages of website design and construction, website planning, collecting content Introduction -  four main stages to building a basic website : Stage 1  - Plan the website structure   Stage 2  - Determine the website content   Stage 3  - Develop the website pages   Stage 4  - Test and evaluate the website
Stage 1:   Plan the website structure   Aims of the website & target audience   Who is the website being developed for ? What are their aims for the website ? Who is the target audience ? What would attract your target audience, keep their attention ? What action do you want the target audience to take ?
Choosing a domain name   Your domain name could: Relate to your company or organisation name Relate to a  product or service, or an event Your domain name should: Be easy to remember! See the course handbook - Attachment 1
List website features required   Make a list of features of your website that will achieve the aims of the website and attract and keep your target audience These features could include the following (and more!):

Determine website navigation structure and page layout   Site Map   a logical representation of how the website pages will link together and what pages will contain certain content or features   Page Layout a visual representation of how elements will be placed on a web page

Page Layout Our basic website will have the following common features on all pages: Header area Contains logo, header graphic Main navigation menu   Links all main pages in the site Main content area Content that is unique to each page Footer area

Stage 2: Determine Website Content   Content should be: Relevant and up to date Support the aims of your website Grab and keep your target audience’s attention Lead your visitors to take the required action eg contact you, make a purchase etc

We  won’t  be going into details of advanced features like online shopping systems, creating graphics, or any advanced programming We will cover Dreamweaver features and skills needed to create a basic website We will cover enough html to give you an understanding of how a basic web site is structured
Conclusion In week 1 of our 7 week course we have: Identified the 4 stages of basic website design and construction Covered Stage 1 – Plan the website structure Produced a Site Map and Page Layout Commenced Stage 2 – Determine the website content Identified possible sources of website content
