An amazing issue of Leonardo Polaris magazine gives a snapshot on innovation in Space: humanity’s new frontier - For centuries Space has been capturing the shared dreamscape as a distant horizon, a promise of discovery, a symbol of progress. Today, Space is no longer the exclusive domain of science fiction. It has quietly become integral part of our day-lives, despite we are often not aware of that. From the navigation signals that guide our smartphones and cars, to the space-based imagery that monitors the health of our planet, to secure connections that protect our data and infrastructure, Space has become a vital layer of modern society. This transformation is proceeding at unprecedented pace and drives the growth of the global Space Economy. It is already worth hundreds of billions of euros annually, and it is scheduled to exceed one trillion by 2030. At the core of this revolution lies a powerful combination of forefront technologies: advanced robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and new generations of satellites forming large constellations around Earth. This is not a distant vision, as it is a transformation that is reshaping entire industrial sectors and opens new opportunities for nations and companies willing to invest and innovate - #staytuned Leonardo Leonardo Space Telespazio e-GEOS Thales Alenia Space Altec SPA Agenzia Spaziale Italiana

The role of #ArtificialIntelligence in advancing #EarthObservation, Space exploration, in-orbit services and Space surveillance was the key focus of the event “AI-Driven Space: From Earth Observation to In-Orbit Services”, held on 19 November at Palazzo Farnese in Rome. The event, hosted and co-organised with the French Embassy in Italy (Ambassade de France en Italie), also aimed at highlighting the strength of Franco-Italian cooperation in driving innovation and competitiveness within the European Space sector. The initiative brought together Italian, French and Franco-Italian stakeholders - including major industrial players, such as Thales Alenia Space, Telespazio and e-GEOS and innovative start-ups - and featured opening remarks by the Ambassador of France to Italy H.E. Martin Briens and Managing Director of #LeonardoSpace Massimo C Comparini. In particular, Massimo Claudio Comparini highlighted how the Space domain is evolving rapidly, driven by fast-advancing technologies and by an exponentially growing amount of data generated across modern infrastructures on Earth and soon increasingly in Space. Turning this flow of information into operational knowledge increasingly relies on AI, advanced algorithms and high-performance computing, capabilities that are becoming essential for programmes such as #Copernicus and #COSMOSkyMed, supporting sustainability, climate and polar monitoring, emergency management and security. This evolution is also shaping future mission architectures, from on-board processing to potential orbital data centres – that will be central in the development of #Leonardo’s EO constellation - and more autonomous exploration capabilities, marking a decisive shift in how Space systems will operate in the years ahead. • Through e-GEOS, Leonardo contributes to the national monitoring activities of Italy’s Marine Protected Areas promoted by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica). The project, included among the initiatives of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (#PNRR) as part of investment "M2C4 Inv. 3.2 Digitisation of national parks and marine protected areas", provides for the development of an integrated surveillance system for marine protected environments and adjacent coastlines, with the aim of ensuring their conservation. "Processing and transforming data into useful information to support informed decision-making strengthens strategic knowledge and oversight capabilities, including for the marine environment, to the benefit of institutions and citizens alike. Earth observation from space and Leonardo’s digital technologies, which make it possible to extract useful information for various user communities, constitute a strategic infrastructure in which we continue to invest, for example, through the development of a new proprietary constellation, to ensure continuity, reliability and autonomy in monitoring the territory and ecosystems, in support of sustainability, security and national competitiveness," stated Massimo C Comparini, Managing Director of #LeonardoSpace. 🆕 e-GEOS is supporting the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica) in safeguarding the waters and coastlines of Italy’s 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬.   🌊🛰️ The project aims to protect over 3,000 km² of habitats through an advanced monitoring system that leverages radar and optical #satellite data, processed via the e-GEOS proprietary #SEonSE solution. Recreational vessels within these areas are monitored to identify zones affected by congestion from anchoring and mooring, with particular focus on traffic in fully protected areas.   🎤 C. Milena A. Lerario, e-GEOS CEO: “We are proud of this project rooted in technological innovation and environmental responsibility, values that have always guided the mission of e-GEOS. #EarthObservation, a domain also considered strategic by Leonardo, is a concrete and crucial sector whose potential is evident in its support for environmental policies and the sustainable management of natural resources. Collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential to enhance these capabilities and translate them into real benefits for the protection of a fragile and precious biodiversity. e-GEOS confirms its commitment to putting its technological skills at the service of a common goal: to preserve the #sea as a vital, economic and cultural resource, and deliver it intact to future generations.”   🗞️ 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦: https://lnkd.in/d5vzXYYF   📸 Regno di Nettuno Marine Protected Area, Italy.
