We are pleased to announce a consortium with Save the Children International and World Wildlife Fund to set new standards for resilient and environmentally-responsible temporary learning spaces. Temporary learning spaces provide lifelines for children caught in emergencies. Yet the sector lacks clear guidance on how to design, build and manage these structures in environmentally-responsible, resilient and inclusive ways. Thousands of such spaces are set up each year and, without proper standards, they can contribute to waste and environmental degradation, further impacting learning conditions. To address this gap, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) is bringing together Save the Children’s leadership in children’s rights and emergency response, Arup’s technical expertise in sustainable and resilient infrastructure, and World Wildlife Fund’s deep environmental knowledge in an innovative partnership bridging humanitarian response, engineering and ecological sustainability. Education Cannot Wait’s US$650,000 Acceleration Facility grant to the consortium will set new standards for greening temporary learning spaces in crisis settings. When I was working for UNICEF in Nepal as a Cluster Coordinator, we really struggled with how to rapidly build enough temporary learning spaces to meet children's needs for safe places to learn, while not damaging the surrounding environment, worsening already unstable hillsides and eroding land. We worked together with structural engineers from the Ministry of Education, as well as partners - including WWF - to think through the environmental impacts of the earthquake and response efforts. We searched for guidance from other contexts and found very little. It is brilliant to see this multi-discplinary partnership coming together Arup, World Wildlife Fund and Save the Children International, supported by Education Cannot Wait (ECW) to address this gap in guidance and take a user-centered design approach to something that all EiE practitioners and literally build into their programming on the daily. https://lnkd.in/erGnMkxz We're going to learn a lot, and we look forward to sharing as we go!
