The 10th edition of Qatar Sustainability Week (Nov 1-8), supported by more than 300 partners, was a resounding success. From sea-bed cleanups and clean-plate campaigns to mangrove restoration efforts, over 700 activities engaged 200,000 community members across the country in a bid to build a more resilient future. We are pleased to see our work on Qatar’s Mangroves Restoration Project featured in CNN’s 2025 Call to Earth series. Launched in 2023 and co-supported by Qatar Foundation’s Earthna and the MSC Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change | وزارة البيئة والتغير المناخي , Qatar University, and Agrico Qatar, the project aims to restore 40 hectares of coastline with mangrove trees, an area roughly equal to 56 football pitches. And here is why: Mangroves are far more than coastal trees. For Qatar, they are powerful climate responders, storing up to five times more carbon than land forests. They act as natural barriers against storms and flooding, reduce coastal erosion, and provide essential nursery habitat for juvenile fish and crabs. Qatar’s mangroves also support a wide diversity of bird life, both resident and migratory birds including the majestic flamingo. Today marked the second and final day of the Blue Economies for Coastal Resilience (BEFCR) workshop, hosted by Qatar Foundation’s Earthna Center. Led in strategic partnership between the MENA Oceans Initiative by Goumbook and Qatar Foundation’s Earthna, the workshop brought together regional experts to advance the upcoming Landscape Analysis and Outlook Review — a key milestone in shaping a regenerative blue economy vision for the MENA region. Day two featured a roundtable discussion on the guidelines for indicator development and a review of the report’s revised structure, followed by sectoral and thematic break-out sessions focused on sectoral benchmarking, best practices, and cross-sectoral harmonisation. Today, Earthna hosted the opening of a two-day regional workshop for the Blue Economies for Coastal Resilience (BEFCR) programme. Phase 1 of the BEFCR is led in strategic partnership between the MENA Oceans Initiative by Goumbook and Qatar Foundation’s Earthna. The workshop marks the first step in developing the upcoming BEFCR Landscape Analysis and Outlook Review, setting the stage for a shared vision and technical framework while fostering cross-sector collaboration towards resilient, inclusive, and nature-positive coastal development across the MENA region. Attendees included leading regional experts in ocean governance, policy, finance, infrastructure, ecosystem management, and innovation. Day one featured roundtables, sectoral breakout groups, and methodology co-design sessions focused on mapping sector maturity phases and pillars, and defining the scope and methodologies for the forthcoming report. في خطوة جديدة لتعزيز التعاون الإقليمي في مجال الاقتصاد الأزرق، استضاف مركز إرثنا اليوم الورشة الإقليمية لبرنامج الاقتصاد الأزرق لتعزيز قدرة السواحل على الصمود (BEFCR)، التي تُعقد على مدى يومين بالشراكة مع مبادرة محيطات الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا (MENA Oceans) التابعة لGoumbook  تركز الورشة على تطوير التحليل الإقليمي والتقرير التوقعي لبرنامج BEFCR ، بوصفها الخطوة الأولى نحو بناء رؤية مشتركة وإطار منهجي متكامل يربط بين الخبرات والقطاعات المختلفة لدعم تنمية ساحلية أكثر مرونة وشمولية عبر المنطقة. وشارك في فعاليات اليوم الأول خبراء إقليميون من مجالات الحوكمة والسياسات والتمويل والبنية التحتية وإدارة النظم البيئية والابتكار، ضمن جلسات تشاركية ومجموعات عمل قطاعية ناقشت مراحل نضوج القطاعات ومنهجيات إعداد التقرير القادم.

At the convergence of rapid development and climate pressures, coastal cities across the MENA region face unprecedented ecological and socio‑economic challenges — and hold the potential to therefore lead through transformative approaches to development. Phase 1 of Blue Economies for Coastal Resilience (BEFCR) is led in strategic partnership between the MENA Oceans Initiative by Goumbook and Qatar Foundation’s Earthna. The joint programme will undertake the first strategic assessment of the impact of climate change on the blue economy, and the opportunities that arise for these sectors to drive coastal, ecosystem, and infrastructure regeneration and resilience. It spans six key sectors, including fisheries and aquaculture, marine tourism, maritime and shipping, offshore energy and renewables, desalination, and coastal development. At the Regional Consultation Workshop in Doha, Qatar this week, global and regional experts will convene to begin a working dialogue laying the analytical framework, surfacing priorities, and guiding cross-sector collaboration towards the Landscape Analysis and Outlook Review. By identifying frameworks that translate regenerative principles into practice, BEFCR aims to connect science, policy, and industry insights into actionable pathways for resilient economies in the MENA region and setting benchmarks for coastal cities globally. We are honored to contribute to the UN Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha. Dr. Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, Executive Director of Earthna, shared insights during a session focused on empowering young professionals with the skills needed for sustainable and inclusive development. Dr. Castro de la Mata shared highlights from Earthna’s recent report on developing a sustainability framework for Qatar. He explained how adoption of an inclusive wealth approach, which broadens the traditional definition of sustainability to include interconnected capitals such as natural, human, knowledge and social capital, can serve as a tool for policymakers to support efforts towards achieving Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and long-term prosperity. Today, in collaboration with Bourse & Bazaar Foundation, we were delighted to host the first day of the two-day Rihla Initiative for Green Economic Growth Policy Forum here in Doha. The Policy Forum represents the first dedicated platform for Gulf-Global South dialogue on climate finance and green economic growth hosted in the Gulf region. More than 50 members of the Rihla Policy Council, including experts, policymakers, and institutional partners, convened for discussions on an array of topics such as Green Urban Development, Sustainable Agriculture and the Blue Economy. The Forum is part of Earthna’s Qatar Sustainability Week campaign. The national campaign, now in its tenth year, includes over 700 public and private activities relating to sustainability, raising environmental awareness among the wider community. At the Paris Peace Forum, Dr. Muez Ali, Research and Policy Lead at Earthna, shared insights on advancing food security and sustainable agriculture in Africa. Africa’s 250 million smallholder farmers make up nearly 30% of global agricultural employment, they contribute less than 3% of global agricultural GDP? Limited irrigation, low mechanization, and minimal fertilizer use continue to hold back productivity, even as climate change increases the pressure on yields. Dr. Ali called for a broader and more inclusive conversation on agricultural finance, emphasizing the need to strengthen public financing and institutions that serve local communities. “We need to rethink what sustainable finance means for agriculture today, and ensure that it works for African farmers first,” he said. في منتدى باريس للسلام، شارك الدكتور معز علي، رئيس قسم الأبحاث والسياسات في إرثنا، حيث سلط الضوء على سبل تعزيز الأمن الغذائي ودعم الزراعة المستدامة في إفريقيا. وأوضح أن أكثر من 250 مليون مزارع صغير في القارة يمثلون نحو 30% من القوى العاملة الزراعية على مستوى العالم، بينما لا تتجاوز مساهمتهم 3% من الناتج المحلي الإجمالي الزراعي العالمي. ويعود ذلك إلى محدودية أنظمة الري، وضعف الميكنة الزراعية، وانخفاض استخدام الأسمدة، في ظل التحديات المتزايدة التي يفرضها تغير المناخ. وأكد الدكتور علي أهمية توسيع النقاش حول تمويل الزراعة ليكون أكثر شمولًا وعدالة، مشيرًا إلى ضرورة تعزيز التمويل العام ودعم المؤسسات التي تخدم المجتمعات المحلية. وأضاف: "علينا أن نعيد التفكير في مفهوم التمويل المستدام للزراعة اليوم، وأن نضمن أن يكون في المقام الأول في خدمة المزارعين الأفارقة."

In the lead-up to COP30, Earthna joined regional experts at the UTalk event organized by the Middle East Council on Global Affairs مجلس الشرق الأوسط للشؤون الدولية, UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen, and QatarDebate Center, to discuss Gulf Climate Action and how collaboration can drive stronger mitigation and adaptation efforts.
