Suncorp insurer AAMI has released new research ahead of storm season, revealing that while awareness of severe weather risks is increasing, common misconceptions still persist. Some of the common beliefs held by Australians include: - it’s only necessary to prepare their home for storms once a year - that you can purchase insurance at anytime (including right before a disaster hits), and - that insurance cover applies to all extreme weather damage, regardless of home maintenance. To help customers avoid costly surprises, AAMI is busting those myths and others before summer is in full swing, in the hope Australians effectively prepare for disaster season. Steven Hussey, AAMI’s Head of Natural Hazard Claims & Assessing, says that home maintenance is an integral part of storm season preparedness. “Many Australians seem to be unaware of the activities they should be doing around the home to strengthen their home against extreme weather,” said Mr Hussey. “When done regularly, you’re giving yourself and your home the best chance of surviving the summer disaster season.” Read the full list of myths here: https://bit.ly/4p6KnG5

When floodwaters destroyed her car, Julie found genuine support from Apia when it mattered most. After a fast-paced career in journalism, Julie is now enjoying semi-retirement and managing the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre — a place she says is filled with “creativity, friendliness and a strong sense of community". But when a summer storm brought heavy rain and a high tide, floodwater inundated her apartment complex basement and damaged her car beyond repair. Julie said: “The experience was initially unsettling, as losing a major asset like a car can be quite daunting. "But thankfully the assessing and claims process with Apia was smooth. We weren't kept waiting, wondering what was going to happen. “We were promptly communicated with; we were very pleased with how responsive Apia was." Suncorp recently joined Brisbane City Council, Queensland Fire Department and Get Ready Queensland at the Brisbane Emergency Services Expo, connecting with thousands of families to share practical tips for preparing homes and communities ahead of storm season. The Expo forms part of Suncorp’s ongoing resilience education program, which helps Australians take small, proactive steps to reduce risk and protect what matters most. From simple maintenance checks around the home to knowing where to turn for trusted information, these everyday actions can make a big difference when severe weather hits. Our team continued this work in North Queensland, joining Townsville City Council and Get Ready Queensland for Townsville’s Get Ready Day on 2 November. These partnerships reflect Suncorp’s commitment to helping communities understand their local risks, prepare early, and recover stronger — part of our broader strategy to build a more resilient Australia and New Zealand. Together we’re building more resilient communities, one conversation at a time. #Resilience #Community #Preparedness #GetReadyQueensland #Suncorp #ProtectingWhatMatters Queensland Reconstruction Authority

A new opinion piece by Suncorp CEO Steve Johnston, first published in the The Australian Financial Review, addresses the hidden cost of the housing crisis. Mr Johnston said: “Driving around the outskirts of our major cities and regional towns, it’s impossible to miss it: a surge of construction in areas that were once farmland. “New homes are now rising where sheep, cattle, cotton and sugarcane once thrived. “There is no doubt that Australia’s housing crisis is real and urgent. “A growing population and record demand have magnified the push to build more homes — fast. “The quickest solution has been to develop on greenfield sites — what was once farms — where land is cheap and there is plenty of it, especially across Australia. “But with this comes substantial and escalating risk for everyone, risks that we can no longer afford to ignore.” Read the full opinion piece here: https://lnkd.in/eKUh3b_r #Resilience #NaturalDisasters #Insurance #HousingCrisis #BuildingFutures #ProtectingWhatMatters

A critical conversation is taking place today at Parliament House in Canberra. Leaders from insurance, housing and resilience sectors are gathering to discuss a long-standing challenge: how to build more affordable homes without putting Australians at greater risk of natural disasters. The Future Housing Roundtable, hosted by Suncorp, is the first of its kind to bring together these critical agendas for a frank conversation about the housing crisis, inadequate planning, and the urgent need to change our approach. The roundtable is centred on a new public policy paper from Suncorp, which explores how to increase housing supply in ways that are both affordable and resilient. The roundtable will be attended by Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Daniel Mulino and New South Wales Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully. Suncorp CEO Steve Johnston said: “For too long, the housing and resilience sectors have operated in isolation, leading to too many homes being built in high-risk areas susceptible to flood, fire and cyclone. “Working together we can drive change and ensure we’re not only creating more housing but that these homes are safe for generations to come.” Read about the Future Housing Roundtable, our new public policy paper and how Suncorp is building resilience: https://lnkd.in/ej2ue_9b #Resilience #NaturalDisasters #Insurance #HousingCrisis #BuildingFutures #ProtectingWhatMatters

Suncorp is warning customers recently impacted by hail storms to stay vigilant against third-party operators posing as insurers. Suncorp Acting Executive General Manager Home Claims Customers Cath Stewart said homeowners should be mindful that "disaster chasers" may approach them after severe weather, and could present themselves in a way that may be confused with their insurer. “Before agreeing to any repairs or rebuilding work consider contacting your insurer to confirm you are covered," she said. "If you're unsure who you are dealing with, ask to see identification such as a builder’s licence or driver’s licence and contact your insurer for verification.” Our teams are on the ground in Bellbowrie, Mt Ommaney, Redbank, Bundamba and Esk this week, offering direct support through Mobile Disaster Response Hubs.
