As ChangeFest25 comes to a close, one message rang loud and clear. Lasting change starts with listening to community and imagining a better future for our children. Throughout the festival, we heard from community leaders, families and partners about their hopes for the next generation. The Early Years Partnership continues to show what is possible when we work with WA Government and local communities to support children to thrive from conception to age four. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories, their wisdom and their vision for stronger beginnings across WA. Only now are we beginning to understand the true scale of the Ningaloo Reef heatwave’s impact. A new survey has recorded 61% coral mortality along a 40 km stretch of the northern lagoon — a devastating loss for this treasured ecosystem. But there is hope. We’re entering a crucial window for recovery, and what we do now will shape the reef’s future. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eFKq2aBi

Day one of ChangeFest25 set the tone for what meaningful, community-led change looks like. Understanding the history and context of our communities is the first step in moving forward together. Through storytelling, deep listening and local leadership, the Early Years Partnership shows how we are working alongside WA Government and four partner communities to improve the wellbeing and school readiness of children from conception to age four. This session highlighted community-led solutions taking shape in Derby, Bidyadanga, Armadale West and the Central Great Southern. More women means more equitable and sustainable environmental outcomes. Gender expert Dr Buhle Francis (PhD) shares how women’s roles, voices and decisions shape sustainable ocean management across the Western Indian Ocean. She also introduces the Hifadhi Blu Gender Action Plan, which supports practitioners to assess and strengthen gender integration in their conservation work. We are committed to making conservation more inclusive, effective and community driven. Last week, the The PERTH Trial (Plastic Exposure Reduction Transforms Health) team at The University of Western Australia brought together leading scientists, clinicians, funders, and policymakers at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research to share new findings on reducing plastic chemical exposure and its impact on health. The event highlighted the strong collaboration between Minderoo Foundation, UWA, and a wide range of stakeholders involved in the trial, including This Little Piggy Went to Market, who are committed to supporting this vital research. A randomised controlled trial has been conducted to examine whether a simple 7-day intervention - focused on providing "minimised-plastic" food, food preparation utensils, and personal care products to people’s homes- can achieve meaningful reductions in plastic chemical exposure. While these results are not yet published, this work is an important step toward understanding whether and to what extent everyday choices can reduce exposure to harmful chemicals such as BPA, BPS, and phthalates. The next stage of the PERTH Trial, Stage 3, which focuses on adults with cardiovascular disease, is currently underway and we are committed to supporting this leading health research. This PERTH trial underscores the urgent need to change our relationship with plastic for good, and we thank all involved for their commitment to driving this change. Photo credit : Matt Jelonek

Charities don’t scale like businesses, and we shouldn’t expect them to. In his op-ed for The Australian, our CEO John Hartman calls for a new way of thinking about productivity in the charity and non-profit sector. One that focuses on outcomes, not just inputs. One that values effectiveness, not just efficiency. From better evaluation and multi-year funding to digital tools that reduce admin and burnout, John outlines practical shifts that can unlock impact across the sector. Marine Protected Areas are one of the most effective tools we have to strengthen ocean and climate resilience. At #COP30, we joined global partners to highlight how protecting blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, coral reefs and salt marshes, supports biodiversity, stores carbon and safeguards livelihoods. The session 'Protecting Ocean Ecosystems' showcased examples of national and regional innovation, and the power of collaboration in accelerating progress toward global ocean protection goals. Protecting and restoring the ocean is critical to climate action. When we safeguard marine ecosystems, we strengthen our environment’s capacity to adapt and thrive.
