Marine Protected Areas are one of the most effective tools we have to strengthen ocean and climate resilience. At #COP30, we joined global partners to highlight how protecting blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, coral reefs and salt marshes, supports biodiversity, stores carbon and safeguards livelihoods. The session 'Protecting Ocean Ecosystems' showcased examples of national and regional innovation, and the power of collaboration in accelerating progress toward global ocean protection goals. Protecting and restoring the ocean is critical to climate action. When we safeguard marine ecosystems, we strengthen our environment’s capacity to adapt and thrive. Nature is one of our best allies in adapting to climate change. Through the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative, we’re promoting nature-based solutions that strengthen climate resilience and protect biodiversity in and around protected areas and critical ecosystems. From reforestation and mangrove restoration to sustainable land management, CAPA showcases how investing in nature can help communities adapt to rising climate risks while safeguarding the ecosystems we all depend on. Our partners at WWF Uganda Official have just completed a powerful impact photo book and video documentary capturing the stories, faces, and places driving this transformation. Watch how nature is helping communities adapt, thrive, and lead the way toward a more resilient future. This morning at the opening of #AEWAMOP9, Ms. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) addressed participants via video message. “Protecting migratory waterbirds from habitat loss, climate change, pollution and other threats is absolutely crucial — crucial so that we can halt and reverse biodiversity loss in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals.” She emphasized the role of AEWA as important for people and for the species it protects, highlighting the Agreement as a model for international cooperation that unites countries across Africa and Eurasia in safeguarding shared flyways and ecosystems. CORILA participates in the launch of the European COAST-SCAPES project for coastal climate resilience! The European project HORIZON2024 COAST-SCAPES, “rethinking COASTal landSCAPES with climate-resilient interventions: systemic land-to-sea solutions”, considers land-coast-sea systems in view of climate change, with the aim of strengthening their resilience and promoting biodiversity conservation. Using transdisciplinary indicators, climate warning systems, innovative business models and knowledge-based maintenance strategies, COAST-SCAPES will design innovative solutions for coastal landscapes to reduce climate risks and improve the quality of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Thanks to its long experience in studying the Venice lagoon and other European coastal environments, CORILA, together with its partners OGS, CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici and the Lagoon Authority, will provide knowledge and tools to ensure the effective application of climate resilience strategies.

#GoodNewsMonday ‘The "High Seas Treaty," a landmark UN agreement to protect biodiversity in international waters (which cover 70% of the global ocean), is set to officially enter into force and take effect in 2026. This treaty allows for the creation of new marine protected areas in vast ocean regions currently outside of national jurisdiction.’ Click the link to read more: https://lnkd.in/dQ4d5dqw Visit https://lnkd.in/d5GvF98f for information on our range of services. #OptimumSustainability #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #CarbonReduction #ChallengeYourFootprint #HighSeasTreaty

Ponds can help us tackle many of the big environmental issues that affect us all: climate change, flooding and pollution. All this, as well as being fantastic for biodiversity. 🐸 💦 Ponds support an extraordinary two-thirds of all freshwater species, and creating clean ponds is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect freshwater wildlife. Find out more ⬇️ This video was created by the PONDERFUL project and received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 869296. We're proud to have been a partner in the #PONDERFUL project, working with partners across Europe and South America to discover more about how ponds and pondscapes can help us adapt to a changing climate.

What if restoring underwater forests could help heal our climate and protect nature? As #COP30 highlights the critical connection between climate and nature, today’s Oceans Day serves as a compelling reminder that the health of our oceans is fundamental to both and that community-led initiatives are essential. This is why the ERM Foundation Future Fund proudly supports Ocean Wise and its seaforestation initiative in British Columbia, Canada. In collaboration with First Nations, coastal communities, industry, and local stakeholders, Ocean Wise is revitalizing vital kelp forest ecosystems. This effort enhances biodiversity, captures carbon, and empowers individuals to take an active role in ocean conservation. Through education, citizen science, and knowledge-sharing, Ocean Wise is inspiring communities across Canada to take meaningful action and foster a wave of restoration. 🌊 A Turning Tide for Ocean Protection 🌊 Incredible progress for our ocean! The High Seas Treaty has now been ratified by 60 countries, officially setting the stage for its entry into force — creating, for the first time, a legally binding framework to establish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) beyond national borders. Alongside this milestone, IUCN #Motion032 and #Motion035 were adopted, focusing on protecting #seamounts, vulnerable #marineecosystems, and the #mesopelagic (“twilight”) zone — some of the most biodiverse yet least protected parts of our planet. Together, these steps strengthen global ocean #governance and bring us closer to achieving 30×30 — protecting 30% of our ocean by 2030. ✅ The High Seas Treaty enables: • Legally designated MPAs in areas beyond national jurisdiction • Environmental impact assessments for high-seas activities • Fair benefit-sharing of marine genetic resources • Greater international cooperation and accountability 🌍 Motions 032 & 035 call for: • Science-based protection of seamounts, deep-sea and mid-water ecosystems • Safeguarding habitats critical for biodiversity and carbon storage • Stronger frameworks for effective, connected #MPAs This is a pivotal moment. The tools, governance, and global will are aligning to protect the blue heart of our planet. Deborah Brosnan.
