Should the United Nations Be Reformed? Submitted by Nagi Ahmed Student # 069911
Introduction What is the United Nations? The United Nations is an organization founded of 1945 after the second world war. The main purpose for the United Nations is to maintain world wide peace, facilitate international security, international law, and social equality. The UN structure is the security council which consists of the following countries Russia, USA, Republic of China, France, and the United Kingdom.
United Nations ACTS Some of the Nations are not using the VETO powers wisely. They are using it for their own interest or the interest of their allies. Other members are not giving the UN the respect it deserves (Israel, China, Libya, and the United States)
Reformation of The United Nations The first step into reforming the UN is allowing new permanent members to contribute more, for example Japan and Germany. Japan and Germany are among the five leading countries worldwide in economical & political terms.
The joining of two significant countries will certainly help the UN function more properly and more efficiently. By joining Security Council those two countries will earn the VETO power making the job of the Security council more efficient
The UN should create new rules and regulations concerning the use of VETO. Rules that forbids using VETO against a resolution calling for a cease-fire or end of hostilities. The UN needs reformation because it is losing its commitment and dedication to its principles of resolving issues peacefully.
Brett D. Schafer, from the Heritage Foundations is a heavy criticizer of the UN & believes it requires reforms. Schafer believes that those countries which contribute to the UN budget with high figures should have more say in the decision-making mechanisms .
United Nations Reform Programs Allow countries such as Germany, Japan, and India to join the Security Council, and enjoy the privileges’ of being permanent members ( VETO Powers) Imposing new and strict and accountable regulations regarding the use of VETO. Always act objectively not subjectively, epically Security Council Members
Impose severe punishment on countries violating the UN resolutions: A) Trade/economical sanctions B) Political Sanctions C) Imposing these sanctions even if the country is part of the Security Council Establishing a committee that monitors and supervises the use of VETO power.
Conclusion It seems the UN as institution has become more of a humanitarian agency rather that the power to direct world polices and resolve conflicts. The location of the UN in New York makes it a hostile institution to the US administration and its interests. I would like to say if the methods mentioned above come into act, there is no doubt that the UN will regain its respect, the respect it deserves, the respect it was built on, and the respect we expect.
