Session 3 Pedagogical Approaches
Definitions of pedagogy and pedagogical approach Activities: Study pedagogical approaches by using the jig-saw method: Individual research (30mins) Sharing the same pedagogical approach in a group (20mins) Sharing different approaches in a group (30mins)
What do you think “pedagogy” means? Simply put, pedagogy is how teachers teach ; includes the styles of teaching Pedagogy is the science and art of teaching Science :  The knowledge of theories of learning and instructional strategies for teaching Art : Correctly putting theories into practice and the building up teaching experiences
What are pedagogical approaches? They are the overall perspectives used to plan and implement one or more instructional strategies Examples on next slide
Examples of pedagogical approaches Case-based learning  Inquiry-based learning  Project-based learning  Resource-based learning  Game-based learning
Imagine that you are preparing a reference document on pedagogical approaches for the professional development of your colleagues in school. The information should be clear and concise as teachers are busy people. Each pedagogical approach should be described and illustrated in no more than the equivalent of one A4 size of paper. Remember to create links to the resources that you cite!
You will use the jig-saw method to teach one another all of these strategies Class will be divided into groups of five Each group member is represented by the letter A, B, C, D or E. Your letter corresponds to the pedagogical approach assigned to the individual
Initial groups (different colours = different approaches)
After individual research, move to specialist groups (discuss with others who have researched the same approach)
Return to initial group and share your findings
Each group member is to conduct individual research on the assigned approach Guiding questions What is the central idea of the approach? What is/are the theory/theories behind the approach? What have you learned from the examples? How might the approach be applied in your classroom? Record your notes in your own wiki Assign one person in the group to be the wiki coordinator Coordinator must invite group members to the wiki and link the wiki to the class wiki
After individual research, meet others with the same assigned approach to discuss what you have found (all the “A" persons meet as a group, all the “B" persons meet...) to discuss findings After refining your individual resource, return to your original group (A-B-C-D-E) Share your area of expertise, critique one another's work, combine your resources  Questions on your task?
For case-based, inquiry-based and project based learning, refer to MOE's Web site http://ict.edumall.sg/ict/slot/u111/engaging_it_practices/lib2learning.htm http://ict.edumall.sg/ict/slot/u111/engaging_it_practices/lib2inquiry.htm http://ict.edumall.sg/ict/slot/u111/engaging_it_practices/lib2project.htm Examples for each approach (most are from primary schools). Study how the approach was used in the example: Case-based learning http://ict.edumall.sg/ict/slot/u111/engaging_it_practices/1understanding.htm Inquiry-based learning http://ict.edumall.sg/ict/slot/u111/engaging_it_practices/1fieldwork.htm Project-based learning http://ict.edumall.sg/ict/slot/u111/engaging_it_practices/1ne.htm
For resource-based learning , refer to the following Web sites and study at least one example Overview of RBL at http://www.saskschools.ca/curr_content/bestpractice/resource/index.html More details and examples are available at: http://www.llas.ac.uk/resources/gpg/409 http://projects.coe.uga.edu/epltt/index.php?title=Resource-Based_Learning
For game-based learning , refer to the following Web sites and study at least one example Overview of GBL at http://serc.carleton.edu/introgeo/games/index.html Definition and examples at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Based_Learning http://www.e-learningcentre.co.uk/eclipse/Resources/games.htm
Meet with others with the same area of expertise to discuss findings [20 min]: What is the central idea of the approach? What is/are the theory/theories behind the approach? What have you learned from the examples? How might the approach be applied in your classroom? Meet with your original groups to critique one another's work and combine your resources [30 min] What is not clear in this write-up? How does this approach seem to differ from the others? Each group's resource must be clearly organised, coherent, and easy to read
Pedagogical approaches are not mutually exclusive   How might approaches learned today be used for self-directed and collaborative learning? This area will be explored in depth next week Note: Your resource is an important reference material for subsequent assignments Continue editing your group resource and complete it by next week
Wiki administrators: Remember to link your group wiki to the class wiki page! Reflect on today’s processes: Have you come across any of the pedagogical approaches as a student? What was your experience like? What do you think is the relationship of these approaches? What roles do the various ICT tools play in these approaches?

Editor's Notes

  • #8 Tutor to decide how many approaches (X) to cover. Number of approaches determines X persons per group.
  • #12 Tutor may provide a template as a guide (see bottom of page at http://nie-ict.pbworks.com/Pedagogical-Approaches-for-SDL-and-CL, which are given below) Tutor to decide electronic form of record beforehand Introduction Imagine that you are preparing a reference document on pedagogical approaches for the professional development of your colleagues in school. The information should be clear and concise as teachers are busy people. Each pedagogical approach should be described and illustrated in no more than the equivalent of one A4 size of paper. Remember to create links to the resources that you cite!   Guiding questions What is the focus (central idea) of the approach? What is/are the theory/theories behind the approach? How might the approach be applied in your classroom? Illustrate your answer with examples. Provide one example that you found and another example that you can think of.   Critiquing process What is not clear in this write-up? How does this approach seem to differ from the others?
  • #18 Instructor to illustrate first point
