These could introduce vulnerabilities that disrupt operations, compromise sensitive data, or erode customer trust. From untraceable data leakage to cross-agent task escalation, these errors and cyber threats threaten to erode faith in key business processes and undermine whatever efficiency gains they offer. To avoid these issues, companies must ensure that their AI policy framework addresses agentic systems and their unique risks. Your new autonomous AI agent could be your greatest asset or your biggest vulnerability. Understanding its unique risks is the first step to deploying it safely. The promise of agentic AI is immense, but so is its potential for creating novel and complex risks. As we move toward systems that act autonomously, our traditional security frameworks are no longer sufficient. We need to start thinking about AI agents as 'digital insiders'—entities with legitimate access that can create significant vulnerabilities if compromised. A new McKinsey report outlines several of these emerging threats (https://lnkd.in/gKEWr236). These aren't just new attack vectors; they're systemic risks. 'Chained vulnerabilities' can allow a single flaw to cascade across multiple tasks, while 'cross-agent task escalation' could let a malicious agent gain unauthorized privileges. Other dangers, like synthetic-identity risk and untraceable data leakage, add further layers of complexity. Treating security as an afterthought is a recipe for disaster. The only way to harness the power of agentic AI responsibly is to embed security and governance into its DNA from day one.
