Autonomous, goal-driven AI agents present a transformative opportunity—but they also reshape the risk landscape fundamentally. McKinsey reports that roughly 80 percent of organisations have already experienced risky behaviour from AI agents—such as unauthorised data access or privilege escalation. These systems act more like digital insiders than passive tools, meaning that governance, identity, traceability and oversight must be built from the ground up. The first zero-click AI agent exploit has arrived — and it’s changing how we think about AI governance. Operant AI has discovered something called “Shadow Escape.” It’s the first known attack that targets the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — the system that allows AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini to connect with enterprise tools, databases, and APIs. Unlike traditional cyberattacks that depend on phishing or user mistakes, this one doesn’t need any clicks or downloads. It works by placing hidden instructions inside normal-looking documents. When an AI assistant processes that file, it unknowingly follows those hidden commands using its trusted MCP access. The result is silent data theft — sensitive information like social security numbers, medical records, or internal business data being exfiltrated without any user action. This attack is invisible to most security systems because it happens inside trusted AI connections, not through external threats. It’s a major blind spot for organizations that have started integrating AI agents into their daily operations. Here’s what business and security leaders should be doing right now: 1. Inventory all AI systems and MCP connections – know which AI assistants have access to internal data, APIs, or tools. 2. Limit permissions – remove system-wide or unlimited access tokens; give AI agents the minimum permissions they need for each task. 3. Sanitize all uploaded content – every file or document given to an AI tool should be treated as untrusted and cleaned of hidden data or commands. 4. Monitor AI activity and data movement – apply the same security controls and data loss prevention rules you use for humans to AI traffic as well. 5. Extend AI governance frameworks – include AI agent behavior, access control, and risk oversight as part of your cybersecurity program. 6. Test your environment – run internal “AI red team” exercises to identify where these kinds of attacks could succeed. Shadow Escape is a reminder that AI security is not only about model safety or prompt injection. It’s about how AI systems connect, act, and make decisions on our behalf. Governance now means making sure our AI agents are not just smart — but also safe, accountable, and under control. The next big cyber risk won’t come from outside.
