There’s still a long way to go.   McKinsey’s 2024 Women in the Workplace report shows a telling truth about our industry: women hold the majority of entry-level roles in pharma and medical products, yet representation steadily declines up the ladder, culminating in just 28% at the C-suite. That disconnect is one I see and feel every day in life sciences. Women are delivering results that shape healthcare’s future—leading through uncertainty, navigating IPO droughts, raising critical capital, and building the cultures that keep organizations strong. Yet too often, those contributions go unseen or under-acknowledged. You don’t have to be the loudest in the room to lead change. Leadership is often mistaken for volume; the person who speaks first, longest, or commands attention. When I first stepped into a leadership role, I felt the pressure to match that stereotype: to speak up, take space, and project confidence in ways that didn’t feel natural. Over time, I learned my leadership didn’t need to be loud to be effective. There is power in listening closely, connecting people and ideas, and creating space for others to be heard. A quieter approach, it turns out, can make a deeper impact. My journey has been shaped by lessons like this. I began my career as an anaesthetist, drawn not only to medicine but to problem-solving; building systems, using data, and creating tools that could transform healthcare at scale. Leaving the security of clinical work to create 33n was unconventional and, at times, risky, especially as a woman forging a path in a sector not designed with women in mind. Yet the precision, empathy, and systems thinking I learned in medicine have been my foundation for scaling innovations like CLEARnotes and leading The National CLEAR Programme to improve NHS care delivery. Reinvention, I’ve learned, isn’t about leaving the past behind, it’s about carrying forward what matters most. Being a quiet radical is about leading authentically, in ways that align with who you are, not who you think you should be. It’s about listening deeply, asking the questions others don’t, and helping those around you find their voice. At 33n, our work is grounded in collaboration, not competition. CLEAR empowers clinicians to lead transformation in their organisations, while CLEARnotes turns frontline insights into actionable intelligence. These innovations succeed because they’re built on collective intelligence, the power of curiosity, diversity, and shared purpose, rather than hierarchy or ego. This Saturday, I’m proud to walk in the Lord Mayor’s Show 2025 with over 200 women as part of the Women in Health-Tech Leading the Future #LeadWITHus cohort. The event celebrates authenticity and the commitment to lift one another, to make space for more women to lead in ways true to themselves. "For years, we've framed this discussion about clinical trial diversity as an equity issue. The notion that representation in trials is some type of ideological exercise misses the mark. This isn't about politics. This isn't a debate between the left and the right. This is a scientific argument about the limitations of homogenous data versus the generalizability of representative data."

I'm privileged to be a panelist this week at the Becker's CEO + CFO forum next week and that event has me particularly reflective on the topics of community partnership and health equity. Everywhere in healthcare, we’re being reminded that collaboration isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s the very structure of how we make progress. Renata Schiavo’s article offers one of the clearest articulations I’ve seen of what it takes to make multisector partnerships work—for health, for climate resilience, and for equity. Her message: partnership is a discipline, not a slogan. It’s built on frameworks, communication strategy, and the courage to stay in conversation when values or goals diverge. Three takeaways I’d highlight for health-system and community leaders: 1️⃣ Partnership is learned, not improvised. We often assume good intentions and “soft skills” are enough. In truth, sustainable collaboration demands structured training in negotiation, consensus building, and trust formation. 2️⃣ Communication is the connective tissue of equity. Effective advocacy means learning the language of other sectors—business, housing, environment, faith, or local government—so that shared outcomes become possible. 3️⃣ Define success together—or not at all. The most durable collaborations measure progress in transparency, mutual benefit, and observed results. Those metrics keep people at the table when resources tighten or priorities shift. Dr. Schiavo closes with a quote from Paul Farmer: *“All of your most important achievements on this planet will come from working with others.”* That line resonates deeply this month as we exit Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The advances that save lives—from early screening outreach to molecular therapies to survivorship care—are the product of the same multisector fabric Schiavo describes. Researchers, clinicians, employers, community advocates, and patients each hold a piece of the solution. Our challenge is to nurture that “culture of partnership” year-round, not only in October.
