What the heck is server-side tracking, and do you need this for your Google Ads campaigns?
Before we can understand how server-side tracking works, let’s clarify how traditional conversion tracking works.
1. When a user visits your website, their browser sends their information to Google.
2. Google then processes that information (do I recognize this user? What do I know about them? Have they visited before? Are they taking action? etc.) on your behalf, and sends it along to Google Ads, Google Analytics, etc.
Don’t get me wrong - this is revolutionary! It’s enabled the entire field of performance marketing to exist. But client-side tracking doesn’t work as well as it used to because of privacy regulations, ad blockers, cookie blockers, and other obstacles that get in the way of that smooth data transmission.
For example, Safari has about 20% of the mobile browser market and blocks client-side tracking by default - so that’s potentially 20% of your mobile conversions gone, invisible to you and to your Google Ads campaigns 😱
That’s where server-side tracking comes in.
With server-side:
1. When a user visits your website, their browser sends their information to YOUR server.
2. YOU then process that information (do I recognize this user? What do I know about them? Have they visited before? Are they taking action? etc.) directly, before sending it along to Google Ads, Google Analytics, etc.
Because the user is on YOUR website, and their browser is talking directly with YOUR server, you can see and process significantly more data since you’re not relying on a third party (Google) sitting in the middle.
Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. Setting up server-side tracking is more complex, and can cost more money, than simply plopping the Google tag on your website.
The trade-off, though, is faster website load times and more complete user data. More data = better Google Ads performance = higher ROI 🤑 so your investment in server-side tracking could potentially pay for itself through improved ROAS.
