Through our Mother Child Program, Rosa* was given a safe space to stay as she worked towards her future while caring for her daughter, Suzy. “When you’re by yourself, there’s so much pressure on you,” she reflected. “Here, you have the support you need.” She credits the program with being a lifeline during a pivotal time, providing motivation and giving her opportunities to grow. Trusting in the Power and Potential of People. Since 1869.
About us
At The New York Foundling, we believe that all people—no matter circumstance or zip code—have the opportunity to reach their full potential. But for all of us, discovering what we are capable of and reaching our full potential requires support along the way. We believe and trust in the potential of all people. We work in partnership with more than 30,000 children, adults, and families each year on their own paths to stability, strength, and independence. We believe in the power of personal choice and self-determination. The New York Foundling has deliberately challenged the notion that individuals are limited by their circumstances or are incapable of making the right choice for their future. Rather, our network of programs, services, and opportunities are carefully designed for children, families, and adults to create transformational change in their own lives. We believe and invest in proven practices. With nearly 150 years of experience creating resources, tools, and social capital, we have learned from our community what works. At the same time, we’re not afraid to invest in bold new approaches that comprehensively address challenges and provide the foundation for people to drive their own future.

Caregivers cannot bring their best to work if they're struggling to make ends meet. #BUMPNewYork is advocating for a $29 #minimumpay for state-contracted human service workers looking after seniors, children, and people with disabilities in New York. Caregivers deserve dignity, respect, and a living wage. Stand with BUMP to raise the pay.

WBNG TV 12 shined a light on #BUMPNewYork's fight for livable wages for human service workers across the state. We're proposing a $29 #minimumpay for New York’s state-contracted caregivers, the people who hold our communities together. As Melanie Hartzog, President and CEO of The New York Foundling, said: “More than 100,000 people will be lifted out of poverty and New York will see $23 billion in economic activity.” This isn’t just a policy change. This is a movement for dignity, stability, and a stronger New York. Know a caregiver who deserves a long-overdue raise? Share this message. Follow our movement.

Would you want the person who takes care of your elderly mother or watches over your toddler struggle to get by—or earn enough to stay and thrive? At The New York Foundling, we see firsthand how poverty wages impact both our workforce and the families we serve. The people who dedicate their lives to caring for New Yorkers shouldn't struggle to care for themselves. An important new report from CUNY Institute for State & Local Governance (ISLG) shows that raising wages of human service workers would generate $1 billion in new state tax revenue and $23 billion in economic activity and pull nearly 100,000 New Yorkers out of poverty. We are proud to launch the BUMP New York campaign which is seeking $29/hr for home health aides, nursing assistants, and childcare workers in New York. It is long overdue. Our goal is simple: A real living wage for those who take care of New Yorkers. #BUMPNewYork is advocating for state laws to raise the #minimumpay for nonprofit human service workers to $29/hour (with annual cost-of-living adjustments). A career in care shouldn't mean a life in poverty.
