With the market evaporating and capital disappearing, we learned and adjusted to stay afloat - and what we learned became the foundation of what we do today. The Architect as Developer Lab Testing an Idea — Gauging Interest I’m considering launching a 6-month Architect-as-Developer Lab — a small group (2–5) of serious candidates who would meet with the team at Mortar to explore the real-world integration of architecture and real estate. Over the years, I’ve seen many architects dabble in development or complete a one-off project. But only a handful have built a sustainable business structure — one that creates financial freedom, lifestyle control, and true ownership of their work. This is the basis for the lab - 👉 Who it’s for: Architects graduating or already in practice who want to: • Move beyond client-service to ownership • Take control of their work • Build a sustainable development business 👉 How it works: • Meet once a month for workshops or site visits • Learn the full process of architect-as-developer, including: • What value architects actually bring to development (vs. what they think they bring) • What architecture school left out • Site acquisition & deal sourcing • Pro forma building & financial modeling • Capital raising & structuring • Design integration & value creation • Risk management • Exit strategies (short vs. long-term hold) • Marketing & investor communications • Architect-as-Developer history — the godfather, the goat, and the new generation (successful models and others that weren’t as successful) • Building a sustainable business model that can survive market cycles • End with creating a thesis + actionable business plan to test your new knowledge Would you (or someone you know) want to be part of something like this? Comments, feedback, or DMs welcome. #ArchitectAsDeveloper #RealEstate #Architecture #FinancialFreedom ⚠️ This is not a general “learn about real estate” program. Applicants should expect to produce work, not just absorb it — the lab is about applying knowledge and building a real, actionable business model.
