Who it’s for: • Architects in practice or recently graduated • Those ready to move beyond client-service • Anyone aiming to build a design-led development model How it works: • Meets monthly (Jan–Apr 2026, in-person or virtual) • Covers deal sourcing, pro formas, site acquisition, and more 📩 To apply by Nov 28, email info@mortargroup.com with: • Resume • 500-word statement: “Why Architect-as-Developer” • Your path so far + 5–10 year vision #ArchitectAsDeveloper #Architecture #RealEstateDevelopment #MortarGroup #DesignBuild #Entrepreneurship
To sum up the lab - My core interest isn't in teaching architects the basics - or how to do a small one-off project or "dabble" in development. Participants should already understand feasibility and project mechanics. The goal is to explore something deeper: how to build viable, scalable business models for the profession itself - structures where architects are no longer dependent on clients, but instead create enduring firms that design, develop, and own their own work. Only a handful of architects have ever truly gotten this balance right, and many have either gone out of business or been forced to compromise their model - because architecture, on its own is rarely a stable foundation. The purpose of the lab isn't to produce another side project or short-term gain; it's to discuss the mechanics to develop a complete framework - a sustainable, architecture-driven development company that can survive business cycles, attract capital, and maintain control.
