ConocoPhillips Australia today announced a natural gas discovery in the Otway Basin. Preliminary estimates for the Essington-1 well indicate 62.6 metres of hydrocarbons in the main reservoir and an additional 33.2 metres in the secondary target. Further analysis will assess flow rates, resource recovery, and commercial potential. “The Essington-1 well is the first discovery in the Otway since 2021 and is a promising start to ConocoPhillips’ exploration activities in the region. The initial results are encouraging, and we look forward to continuing drilling our second exploration well in December,” said Jan-Arne Johansen, President, ConocoPhillips Australia. Special thanks to our Joint Venture Partners Korea National Oil Corporation and 3D Energi Limited. Find out more: https://bit.ly/4oMTsnE

ConocoPhillips uses a smaller drilling rig, known as a Super Spudder, to handle the early well-construction phases before bringing in a more expensive "big rig" to finish the longer lateral drilling. By pre-drilling surface and intermediate sections, this specialized rig facilitated delivery of 19 wells ahead of schedule in the first half of 2025. Originally raised in June 2021 to mark National Indigenous History Month in Canada, this tipi (also tepee or teepee) stands at ConocoPhillips’ Surmont oil sands asset in the Athabasca region of northeastern Alberta. It is a meaningful symbol of our ongoing commitment to build respectful, trust-based relationships with Indigenous communities in the region. Through formal agreements, we work with these communities to identify mutual areas of interest and create lasting benefits. Additionally, we have worked with Indigenous-owned businesses near Surmont to help develop local capacity for more than two decades. See more: https://bit.ly/4hw2HWr
