In rural Panama, young people are becoming environmental leaders by restoring forests and protecting biodiversity. Created in 2010 by Fundación Pro Eco Azuero, the Spider Monkey School Initiative empowers children and rural schools in Panama’s Azuero Peninsula to become leaders in species conservation and resilience to climate change. The project reaches 32 schools and over 2,700 children annually, while empowering women through seed banks and community-run tree nurseries. Its integrated approach strengthens ecological knowledge, mentorship, community pride and intergenerational learning. This initiative is one of the 2025 laureates of the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development, which honours transformative and innovative projects from around the world.

Aldabra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Indian Ocean, is home to extraordinary biodiversity but also to large amounts of plastic waste carried by ocean currents. Flip-flops, fishing buoys and nets, bottle caps, jerrycans and fragments of degraded plastic accumulate year after year on its shores. On this uninhabited atoll, every piece of waste comes from the sea, travelling long distances before washing ashore. This new episode in our series reveals the scale of the pollution affecting one of the world’s most isolated natural sanctuaries and highlights the urgent need to stop plastic at its source. UNESCO and Plastic Odyssey are partnering to combat plastic pollution in marine World Heritage sites through science-driven action, innovation and community-based solutions. https://lnkd.in/e4uTEUGK #Aldabra #UNESCO #WorldHeritage #PlasticOdyssey 📹 Credit: Marine Reveilhac
