SOOFI (Sovereign Open Source Foundation Models) project launched An important step for European AI sovereignty: Under SOOFI, scientists from six leading German research institutions will work together in the future to provide sovereign European alternatives to AI technologies from the US and China. The focus is on using the models to contribute to the industrial use of AI. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and operated on Deutsche Telekom's Industrial AI Cloud, SOOFI is laying the foundation for an independent European AI ecosystem. The project participants are: Fraunhofer IAIS - Nico Flores-Herr Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI) - Antonio Krüger L3S Research Center - Wolfgang Nejdl hessian.AI - Kristian Kersting University of Wuerzburg - Andreas Hotho Berlin University of Applied Sciences Berlin (BHT) - Alexander Löser Fraunhofer IIS - Jan Plogsties Merantix Momentum - Thomas Wollmann ellamind - Maximilian Idahl KI Bundesverband - Joerg Bienert Telekom subsidiary T-Systems is providing its new Industrial AI Cloud for training the powerful large language model. The large language model is thus finding its home in one of Europe's largest AI factories, which has over 10,000 GPUs.
