About us

Hecker Guthrie, based in Melbourne, is one of Australia’s leading design practices undertaking projects, in the hospitality, residential, retail and commercial sectors, both here and abroad. The directors, Paul Hecker and Hamish Guthrie, who appear on the surface to present a sort of yin and yang in terms of personality, have at their core common design beliefs that support and sustain one another and the broader practice. Meeting at the offices of architect Darryl Jackson, in the mid 1990s, and working on a project together when it was rare for interior designers to be commissioned they clicked, and subsequently set up a partnership now in its 19th year. Over that period they have forged a distinct approach to their multi-disciplinary practice through a series of closely held beliefs that include the expression of authenticity from the initial idea, through a series of spatial decisions and material choices, to the finished space. These shared attributes are balanced by thoughtfulness (Hamish) and enthusiasm (Paul) bringing design solutions and providing an umbrella perspective which takes in several areas of expertise; interior design, building design, industrial design, furniture design and styling. A staff of 17 adds a wealth of interdisciplinary design skills and collaborative know how and is thoroughly supported by a strong administrative team. The practice believes in working with the client to develop an overarching concept which drives a project and becomes a shared journey, with Hecker Guthrie delivering above and beyond in terms of commitment, quality and vision. The aim of the practice is to create spaces that are endearing and beautiful, where the feeling speaks louder than the furnishings and the levels of charm and comfort outweigh the instant gratification of the merely new. As featured in last weekend’s Domain, Piccolo House - 18 Barry St, Kew, is a reflection of our commitment to creating residences that strike a delicate balance, respecting prestigious heritage homes while presenting a fresh and considered addition to the streetscape. For our latest iteration at 18 Barry St, Kew we embraced the challenge of its prestigious location by focusing on a design that contributes to, rather than dominates, the streetscape. Creating homes that feel private and serene while connected to the wider community. In our fourth collaboration with Woods Bagot and Hecker Guthrie, we've envisioned Piccolo House as a series of small-scale pavilions. Each rigorously positioned to maximise light, outlook and privacy. A key driver has been catering to the lifestyles of our residents, leading to our most extensive offering of shared spaces yet. The project integrates a comprehensive wellness area featuring an indoor thermal pool, a sauna, a cold plunge, alongside a golf simulator and a 16-seater private dining room and a temperature-controlled wine cellar. It’s a place where privacy is protected, and shared spaces encourage gentle interaction without obligation. We’re proud to share that The StandardX Melbourne has been named Hotel of the Year at the 2025 Australasia-Pacific Hotel Design Awards. This recognition speaks to the strength of a shared vision and the energy that emerges when global ambition meets local culture. The design called for both confidence and deep contextual understanding. Working in close collaboration with Standard International’s design team, led by Verena Haller, and architects Woods Bagot, we set out to craft a hotel that channels Fitzroy’s raw edge and creative spirit, realised through texture, contrast and the contribution of exceptional local makers. Our deepest thanks to the local makers and artists who brought our vision to life - Charles Sandford Woodturning, Volker Haug, Adam Goodrum, Sarah Parkes, Dean Norton, Jordan Fleming and many more. And to our client, thank you for trusting us to shape this new brand with boldness and intent. We’re honoured by the recognition, and proud of our team for delivering a project that speaks so clearly to place. Congratulations to all the award winners, and thank you to Design Inn for championing narrative-led design and its role in defining the next generation of hospitality experiences. #HeckerGuthrie #TheStandardX #AustralasiaPacificHotelDesignAwards #HotelDesign #InteriorArchitecture #DesignExcellence #NarrativeLedDesign #Fitzroy

  • To mark International Women's Day, we spent a thought provoking morning learning about the important work of Women's Property Initiatives. Thank you to Ola Hensworth and the Piccolo team for organising and hosting this inspiring event.

    Chief Financial Officer at Piccolo

Today at Piccolo, we celebrated International Women’s Day with our amazing consultants from Woods Bagot, Hecker Guthrie, and Acre. But most importantly, we honored an incredible organization that is truly making a difference in the fight against homelessness for women: Women's Property Initiatives (WPI). WPI is working tirelessly to create new beginnings for women and children at risk of homelessness. They’re not just providing housing—they’re offering permanent, affordable homes, access to essential support networks, and passionate advocacy for those who need it most. We were privileged to hear from Lucy Simms Sims, the Chief Commercial Officer a dear friend, as well as Roberta Buchanan, the inspiring CEO, who shared their vision and the impactful work WPI is doing. International Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in driving positive change. Whether you’re a woman, a man, or somewhere in between, we all have the opportunity to make a difference in building a more inclusive and supportive community.
