If you're working in .NET you could try

ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(myButton, this.GetType(), "BlockName", "alert('hello world');", true);

You probably want the onmouseup event:

<button onmouseup="alert('You release the mouse button!')">Click me</button>
