I'm trying to use git bash in windows to clone a repository from. I set up my public/private ssh keys and manage to connect to gitlab through ssh. However, when I want to clone a repository, I'm getting "authentication failed" messages from git. Debug logs follow:

  • @JamesSheils that is indeed what caused the problems. Don't know why they are not looking in the same place, but apparantly only one of them uses the $HOME variable Commented Apr 19, 2017 at 8:16

You have got some mess in front of your username:

it authenticates to different user and therefore fails. Try to write the git path manually instead of copying it from somewhere.

Thanks for helping me out, 2 years down the road. I figured out what caused this sequence. When you copy and paste, if you just use your mouse to do it, it's fine, if you use Ctrl+Shift+V, you get these odd extra characters. If you git remote remove origin and then git remote add origin <URL> it will work.

Apparently, I changed my $HOME and it turned out not both ssh and git were using my new $HOME variable. One of them still found keys somewhere else.
