Set some Big
Rocks
What is a Big Rock?
A Big Rock is a powerful metaphor, shaping the way individuals
and businesses approach their objectives. Coined by Stephen
Covey in his seminal work "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People," the term draws inspiration from a visual metaphor that
underscores the importance of prioritisation in achieving
meaningful goals.
In Covey's metaphor, a large container represents our time,
resources, and attention.
The 'Big Rocks' symbolise the most critical and strategic goals we
aim to achieve.
The metaphor gains depth as Covey introduces the notion of
adding smaller elements like gravel, sand, and water to the
container.
The key insight is that to ensure the Big Rocks fit, they must be
placed first—highlighting the significance of prioritising major goals
before addressing lesser, more routine tasks.
Typical Big Rock Areas
Potential Big Rock Categories:
1. Marketing & Sales
2. Operational Efficiency
3. People and Management
4. Finance and Infrastructure
Your Plan should include 2 additional elements:
• What are you going to do to improve yourself and/or your
Team? Add them as a Big Rock e.g. Build my Leadership
Skills
BIG ROCKS and
MEASURES
EXERCISE:
Develop Your Big
Rocks
Develop 2 to 4 Big Rocks - "large actions" required
to move you from NOW to WHERE and write a
short description of what the Big Rock means.
Use the potential categories as a Guide:
1. Marketing & Sales
2. Operational Efficiency
3. People and Management
4. Personal Growth and Development
5. OPTIONAL Finance and Infrastructure
EXAMPLES:
1. Grow our business in SEQ
2. Improve our productivity
3. Engage the Team
4. Grow my Leadership Skills
5. OPTIONAL: Upgrade our IT and Systems
Big Rocks and
Measures
• For each Big Rock, define a Goal, key measures and
an annual target
Example:
BIG ROCK: Grow our business in SEQ
Key Measures and Targets
• Sales - $1.2M
• New Clients – 10
• Sales Conversion% = 75%
What is your Strategy
to get from NOW to
WHERE?
• Definition: “Strategy is a medium
term Action that is large in scope
and decisive”
• ”Grow our sales” is not a strategy
- it is an aspiration.
• “Increase product X sales by
focusing on SEQ market” is a
strategy.
EXERCISE: Develop
Your Strategy
• Complete the statement in your Workbook
“We will <decisive action> in order to
<Objective>”
EXAMPLES:
• “We will secure the Hill in order to control the
battlefield”
• “We will increase Product X sales by focusing
on SEQ market in order to improve margins”
DISCUSSION
In groups of 2 or 3:
• Explain your Strategy and why its
important
• Give feedback on whether is an
“aspiration” or a “strategy”
• Take turns.
• Share only information that you are
comfortable sharing
WHERE
NOW
HOW
The HOW
Where the rubber hits the road
Copy your
Big Rocks
from above
EXERCISE: Develop
Your Strategies
For each Big Rock define the 2-3x Strategies
required to deliver the Big Rocks in the next 1-2
years
EXAMPLE:
Big Rock:
1. Grow our business in SEQ
Strategies:
1.1 Refine Product X Package
1.2 Improve our Sales Conversions
1.3 Develop a strong Marketing Plan
EXERCISE: Develop
the Strategic Actions
For each Strategy, develop 2-3 Actions to focus delivery of
this outcome in the next 12 months.
Define:
WHO? Who is responsible for ensuring the task is complete
WHEN? When will we start this task? Q1, Q2, Q3 or Q4?
EXAMPLE:
1.2 Improve our Sales Conversions
1.2.1 Update relevant Sales Collateral – Max Q1
1.2.2 Build a Sales Pipeline – Mary Q1
1.2.3 Improve our Sales Skills – Margaret Q2
EXERCISE: Stop,
Prop and Reflect
Take 3 minutes to reflect on your Plan
ASK:
• Is it achievable?
• Will the Actions enable us to meet 80% of
our Objectives?
• What is missing?
• What should be eliminated?
• What are the MUST DO’s?
DISCUSSION
In groups of 2 or 3:
• Explain your Big Rocks and why
they are important
• Give feedback on whether they are
“Operational” or a “Strategic”
• Take turns.

answers as a concise table.”
Prompt 11: Resource Planning Forecast
