- #3 During this session we will briefly discuss the changes to business applications and workloads, some of the specific values that can be gained with zEnterprise and then review several client examples built by the teams over the course of the last year.
- #4 Around the world, all industries are re-shaping their business models. They are facing enormous pressure to enhance their business functions to meet the demands of a highly sophisticated consumer, whether it is the increased use of the web and internet or the desire to command life from mobile devices such as a Blackberry, the iPhone or even an iPad. As the consumer becomes “Smarter” businesses will have to respond. In the Retail industry the move from ‘brick & motor’ has pressured companies to make sure the on-line experience is profitable and efficient. They are doing this with predictive selling, proposing products to the consumer based on previous purchases, or by providing an enhanced function like being able to save for college while you shop. In Healthcare and across industries, it has become imperative that the provider has the most current and detailed information about a patient or consumer. We, the consumer, demand that there be safe, consolidated records of our health, finances and travel preferences.
- #5 These new business models are driving requirements for complex changes into the components of a traditional workload or application, they are driving IT further into the need for heterogeneous computing and towards what can be called a hybrid transaction. A hybrid transaction is the idea that a transaction requires multiple types of architectures for the highest level of efficient execution and in order to attain SLA requirements. Let’s use a real world example of such an application. You call your wireless carrier to ask them about a charge to your bill. They do a traditional query of your account and answer your question. At the same time they do the traditional query, they do an analysis of your account, which is considered business intelligence and they suggest that if you change your plan to Plan XYZ, you can save $20 a month. In that one transaction they’ve combined to types of processing. One is the query is traditional OLTP and the second is a complex query against the operation DB, which is CPU intensive, and in the past typically done on different platform against a Data Warehouse DB. This is one example, and I’m sure you can come up with others that you encounter in your everyday life. The assertion is that transactions will benefit more and more from integrated or offboard accelerators for its processing. This is seen in the enterprise today with the proliferation of appliance accelerators such as WebServices, ESBs, and Encryption. Therefore the IT will need to evolve to complete application integration to address these future business requirements.
- #6 Unfortunately, while IT needs to evolve quickly to become highly responsive, flexibly to astonishing degrees, secure and cost competitive, it is naive to think this can be done effectively and efficiently utilizing a single platform architecture. As the example of the ‘hybrid’ transactions shows, all platforms have a role to play, each having their own strengths (and weaknesses). System z excels in many areas however we are known for leading edge data serving and the highest of security, resilience and scalability for on-line transaction application components. Power systems are best at handling the need for high performance demands such as numerically or video intense components. And clearly System x has the broadest portfolio of vendor and industry specific applications, serving very well the needs of critical niche applications or application components. What we are seeing, is that more and more applications require the interaction and integration of multiple platforms to achieve end-to- end business success.
- #7 We all see these workloads everyday, across industries. In Banking there are components across retail and wholesale banking that rely on several architectures to execute, but the core of most banking relies on System z and z/OS. Insurance typically maintains Claims processing on z but reaches out to the internet for interaction with consumers, utilizing Linux, Unix and Intel. Public Sector is relying more and more on the web based capability to reach out to consumers and improve the rate of return for taxes, accurate payment of social benefits and even Census based reporting.
- #8 During this session we will briefly discuss the changes to business applications and workloads and then review several client examples built by the teams over the course of the last year.
- #9 The Value of zEnterprise begins with the z196. Tremendous gains have been designed and implemented into the traditional System z processor and will greatly enhance and expand key workloads. For example, for traditional z/OS applications that continue to run mission critical work around the globe, there could be up to 40% improvement in performance. Or for workloads that require CPU intensive capability, new compilers and instructions could produce up to an additional 30% gain in performance. As we look at all the enhancements being delivered in the z196, you can see that critical business workloads like SAP, Multi-Tier Web Serving, Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing, will all see gains from the new instructions, new compilers, new memory design, improved cache, a faster processor and simply more capacity. System z continues to enhance capabilities to lead the industry for mission critical workloads that require the highest qualities of security, reliability, scalability, consolidation and environmental efficiency.
- #10 However, as mentioned earlier, no single platform can be designed to handle the complex nature of today’s business applications and zEnterprise is a unique solution being brought to the industry in recognition that heterogeneous workloads must be integrated and managed logically as one to enable the success of today and the future. With many customers that means there is a need to surround System z (z/OS and Linux on z) with additional capability. The z BladeCenter Extension (zBX) provides the capability to compliment, embrace and grow applications and workloads that rely on System z for data serving and key business workload components. Poor quality data will cost the banking industry 27 billion USD in operating costs. In retail, an error between billing and shipping can have a ripple effect throughout the supply chain. For Insurers, inaccurate data can make it difficult to properly underwrite and manage risk. Singapore Land Transport Authority was able to leverage a DB2 and WebSphere based solution to reduce revenue short comings due to lost transactions by 80% by creating a national transport fare clearinghouse that enables customers to use one fare card for all modes of public transportation. - #13 Let’s look at a customer scenario based on IBM analysis of a large Financial Services' company data center including 100,000 mainframe workload MIPS and 10,000 distributed workloads - 7000 light, 500 heavy, and 2500 with heavy I/O characteristics. Some of the distributed work is connecting and doing large scale data and transaction processing on z/OS. System z delivers the lowest cost per unit of work for large scale data processing workloads with its huge I/O bandwidth, high utilization, and structure management practices. The customer will continue to choose z/OS for this work. Now lets look at the distributed work - the customer needs to consider what is the best alternative for the distributed applications –their current distributed platform or deploying them on zEnterprise, placing some work on Linux on z, some on x86 blades, and some on POWER blade in the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter Extention (zBX). When you compare the zEnterprise configuration with the current configuration on the older xeon and nehalem technology, the cost of acquisition on zEnterprise is considerably less at 56% When factoring in power, labor and storage costs in addition to server and network acquisition, a zEnterprise solution yields a 55% TCO improvement over choosing the all Intel based solution. When you look at network complexity, the current solution requires a total of 13,563 network parts (switches, cables, adapters) as compared to a zEnterprise solution with 202 total network parts.. zEnterprise significantly reduces network parts by 98.5% compared to the client’s existing data center, equivalent to a 95% reduction in cost. zEnterprise allows you to optimize technology deployment to the right fit for purpose processors, with lower cost and improved quality of service.

- #17 During this session we will briefly discuss the changes to business applications and workloads and then review several client examples built by the teams over the course of the last year.
- #18 One of the first clients we worked with is a US retail business running SAP for there financials. The data serving component is on DB2 for z/OS with application servers spread across several Power based systems. The SAP environment is one key application encompassed by a highly complex infrastructure. Some of the challenges noted were the difficulty had trying coordinate monitoring, application maintenance and testing across platforms. They noted their hardware microcode updates required outages and multiple monitoring tools were used per server type with different processes by site and location. Finally, when the team traced the path of a transaction it was discovered that it required no less than 12 hops across the network to complete a transaction.
- #19 The environment with zEnterprise has the SAP data server on DB2 z/OS with application serving on Power 7 Blades integrated in a zBX and managed by the Unified Resource Manager. The benefits noted were straightforward, consistency of business controls, ability to monitor and manage the application from end to end and as well as the benefit of consolidating skills and software costs by streamlining the tool choices. In the course of the exercise the client was also able to identify benefit associated with the private network associated with zEnterprise. There is preliminary belief that the use of the private data network from the application servers to the database will be able to eliminate the requirement for encryption and firewalls, reducing the network hops from roughly 12 down to 1. This could provide the benefit of lowered cost and improve response time across an end to end transaction.
- #20 SAP is organized in 2 or 3 tier architectures. The first tier is the presentation layer (which is not depicted here). This is basically the personal computer, laptop, desktop, Mac, … where the SAP GUI resp. the Webbrowser is running as graphical interface. It connects to the second tier, which is the SAP application server (marked as “SAP App Servers”). The third tier is the database server (the big grey box). In two tier architectures, SAP application server and the database run on the same server. So with SAP on System z, you do have zLinux as Application Server platform, which is the two tier architecture. In three tier architectures, the SAP application server can be either System p with AIX, x86 with Windows, and x86 with Linux (in order of customer preference). The main difference between two and three tier is, that in three tier architectures there is a network between application server and database server. SAP has been explicitly designed for this network layer in the three tier architecture, however low latency is still an excellent thing. The SAP Enterprise Search engine TREX only supports the following platforms: Linux on x86_64 (64 bit) Windows on x64 (64 bit) SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management (SAP NW MDM) is a component of SAP's NetWeaver product group and is used as a platform to consolidate, cleanse and synchronize a single version of the truth for master data within a heterogeneous application landscape. It has the ability to distribute internally and externally to SAP and non-SAP applications. SAP MDM is a key enabler of SAP Service-Oriented Architecture. Standard system architecture would consist of a single central MDM server connected to client systems through SAP Exchange Infrastructure using XML documents, although connectivity without SAP XI can also be achieved. There are five standard implementation scenarios: Content Consolidation - centralized cleansing, de-duplication and consolidation, enabling key mapping and consolidated group reporting in SAP BI. No re-distribution of cleansed data. Master Data Harmonization - as for Content Consolidation, plus re-distribution of cleansed, consolidated master data. Central Master Data Management - as for Master Data Harmonisation, but all master data is maintained in the central MDM system. No maintenance of master data occurs in the connected client systems. Rich Product Content Management - Catalogue management and publishing. Uses elements of Content Consolidation to centrally store rich content (images, PDF files, video, sound etc.) together with standard content in order to produce product catalogues (web or print). Has standard adapters to export content to Desktop Publishing packages. Global Data Synchronization - provides consistent trade item information exchange with retailers through data hubs (e.g. 1SYNC) Since the server is basically an in-memory cache, price performance of memory does play a huge role here again. Available on Windows, AIX, and Lintel in order of customer preference. The SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator powered by TREX is exclusively available as an appliance on a Linux Blade Center as a black box without virtualization . It does exactly what the name implies, it accelerates SAP NetWeaver BW and it is extremely popular with SAP customers. It is to some extent in competition to IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer, however as usually true for the competing areas between SAP and IBM: IBM has the generic solution, SAP has the SAP specific solution. Let me give you an example: If a customer is an SAP only shop, he will tend to use SAP PI/XI. But if he has other stuff besides it, he will use WebSphere. Linux on x86_64 (64 bit), SUSE only, vendors are IBM, HP, Sun, Dell, Fujitsu, Cisco The SAP ESR (Enterprise Service Repository) powered by TREX is exclusively available as an appliance on a Linux or Windows Blade Center: Linux on x86_64 (64 bit) Windows on x64 (64 bit)
- #21 This customer provides an application that automates the tax processing of receipts for small businesses For example the bakery or the bucher send their receipts per fax and the receipt is stored in a DB2 database. After that the receipt will be virus scanned and an OCR processing follows to send the receipt values to the tax consultant of the bucher, bakery, etc. The small business can then login to the application to see the status of the receipt. In addition to System z, CICS and DB2, the application requires WebSphere on Power, Windows on Intel and there is a desire to enhance with Web Services driven by DataPower. The challenges identified in their workshop were that thier limited staff and complexity limited the ability to respond to new function requests in a timely fashion. Also the pure cost of staff to maintain a multi-platform, complex infrastructure was very challenging to the organization.
- #22 The environment with zEnterprise has data and some business logic using DB2 z/OS and CICS, additional business logic and application serving resides on Power 7 Blades integrated in a zBX and managed by the Unified Resource Manager. The benefits noted a simply increase in network speed by 10x. Their data center today runs strictly across 1GB. In addition they saw value in the ability to monitor and manage the application from end to end. It was also noted that being a smaller enterprise, with staffing challenges, the packaging of zEnterprise and zBX being pre integrated and pre tested by IBM at the plant, was going to save them time and minimize human intervention errors.
- #23 Today the internet banking for a large European bank is structured across System z, Power and Intel within a complex Parallel Sysplex. There are multiple sites and the application supports banking in over 22 countries. The environment is extremely complex and has several, single points of failure. During the course of mapping the application the client also discovered majority of thier maintenance is applied manually. Each of these challenges contributes to demanding requirements for staff, and has made it difficult for the bank to address the application backlog and enhance their customer service across the banks represented. Client desires modernize and move aggressively forward to a more service oriented approach to application development. Complexity and maintaining multiple infrastructures has made this difficult.
- #24 The proposed zEnterprise environment provides this client to initially simplify and standardize their infrastructure. Lowering cost by instituting a single management and policy framework. There is also strong believe that zEnterprise will provide flexibility in platform choice as the choose how to move forward with Service Oriented Architecture. The ability to ‘right fit’ application service components, choosing platforms as appropriate to gain performance but be cost efficient, is attractive and believed to be an exclusive of this offering. They feel this will provide them the ability to put greater focus on delivering new business function and enhancing the ‘local bank’ experience across multiple European countries. As the client has progressed further with the activity, exploring more of the options and benefits of zEnterprise, they have now also embarked on an investigation of their IT organization, believing that restructure my allow them to derive even higher benefits.
- #25 A large healthcare claims provider has begun to investigate choices for expanding their implementation of Master Data Management. Today the client has begun with the MDM server on AIX on Power, front ending multiple data stores across DB2 and IMS. The project needs to expand to consolidate data and systems, this has been difficult due to numerous acquisitions. There is also tremendous pressure to support new industry standards while streamlining development/test and promotion to production. A desire to have end-to-end visibility of the application was also given as a requirement.
- #26 The zEnterprise environment would provide the client the opportunity to evaluate several choices (z/OS, Linux for z, AIX) for placement of the MDM server, including the freedom to choose multiple platforms while gaining the ability to manage and monitor all platforms as if they were logically one system. The client feels this will increase their ability to respond and competitiveness in a very challenging industry. There is an ability to co-locate data and application in a better fashion, taking advantage of the high speed private network. Possibly there is an opportunity to reduce firewalls and encryption. Enhanced virtualization across architectures will allow them to consolidate and simplify. In addition, the client is located in a large metropolitan area and has noted the integration of the zBX in the zEnterprise will provide significant savings in facilities and energy costs.
