WHAT WE’LL BE DOING
● How to use design & technology to help determine if
your product is an answer to a real user need;
● What is possible when you have access to
technology to build solutions;
● What is practical, aka feasible and viable;
● Proving that your idea/solution can deliver the value
and solve a problem;
● How to decide what to build, is your solution
economical and sustainable?
● How to use pre-existing tools and technologies to
help you “Macgyver” your solution in the early
stages, to cheaply test, prototype and iterate

THE INTERNET - A HISTORY
1414
THE INTERNET - A BETTER EXPLANATION
1515
Quick Explanation
Things created by humans to solve a problem.
1616
WHY IS ALL THIS IMPORTANT?
Humans might not be needed any more
1717
The most accessible form of technology we have are
Apps
What’s an app?
An app is not a business, it’s a function. - James Altucher
A business has customers, revenues, and helps people solve problems.
Apps are things created by humans for other humans to solve a problem
1818
What do I need to consider before
building an app
19
What is the Problem?
MVP DOCUMENT
20
Have you considered Designerly Thinking (TM
)?
MVP DOCUMENT
2121
Designerly Thinking 101
Design thinking involves developing new ideas and practices which are
based on evidence and other successful ideas.
These ideas are refined and converted into practices, which are then
rigorously tested to determine their efficacy.
When a practice is determined to be effective, it is scaled to enhance its
impact.
Design in its most effective form is a process, an action, a verb not a noun.
Design is most often used to describe an object or end result
"Design thinking focuses on three main elements of a product or
service: people, technology and business." - David Kelley, Founder of
IDEO
2222
DESIGN VS DESIGN THINKING
Design thinking allows you to come up
with solutions that are empathic,
engage with your customers and
provides value
Design is the most powerful tool and
when used effectively, can be the
foundation for driving a brand or
business forward.
2323
DESIGN VS DESIGN THINKING
24
How do learn how to do this?
MVP DOCUMENT
Practice, Practice, Practice
2525
ALRIGHT LET’S STOP, COLLABORATE AND LISTEN
26
Activity 1: Let’s Redesign our wallets
MVP DOCUMENT
1. Divide into groups of 2
2. Interview a partner
3. Dig Deeper - 2nd interview
4. Capture Findings
a. What are they trying to achieve with their
wallet
b. Find Insights: What did you learn about your
partner’s feelings and motivations.?What’s
something you see about your partner’s
experience that maybe s/he doesn’t see?
5. Frame your partner's point of view
__Your partner's name or description”__ needs a way
to __their needs___ because (or “but….” or
“Surprisingly…...”) ___ your insight____
6. Come up with a radical way to meet their needs
7. Share your solution and capture feedback
27
Activity 2 : How do you make toast ?
MVP DOCUMENT
1. Everyone gets a piece of paper and to draw how they make toast.
2. Everyone stick their process map up on a wall or lay them out on a table.
3. Pick 5 steps you like from the collection of toast processes and draw
these steps onto a post it note (teams use the same colour post its), if
you have double ups remove the extra
4. Each member of the team picks one step to make a collaborative “making
toast diagram”
Using SCAMPER method your team should collaboratively use the
remaining steps to refine the draw toast process.
(S) substitute, (C) combine, (A) adapt, (M) modify, (P) put to another use,

SOFTWARE
2929
SOFTWARE: WHAT IS SOFTWARE
Computers need instructions/program to tell it what it do, these
instructions are called software. Software instructions are written using a
programming language and stored on devices. These instructions are
colloquially known as code
Input Output
Computer
3030
SOFTWARE IS SHEET MUSIC
Writing code can be thought of as music composition, written once interpreted by different
performers with sometimes varying results
3131
SOFTWARE IS SHEET MUSIC
“Whereas building architecture is often used as an analogy for software architecture, music
composition may be a better analogy.
A building architect creates a static description of a relatively static structure. In music
composition and software design, the composer (software architect) creates a static
description of a piece of music (architecture description and code) that is later performed many
times. In both music and software the design can account for many components interacting to
produce the desired result, and the result varied depending on the performers, the
environment in which it is performed and the interpretation imposed by the
programmers”
- Beautiful Architecture: Leading Thinkers Reveal the Hidden Beauty in Software
Design
3232
SOFTWARE IS EATING THE WORLD
“Software is also eating much of the value chain of industries that are
widely viewed as primarily existing in the physical world. In today's
cars, software runs the engines, controls safety features, entertains
passengers, guides drivers to destinations and connects each car to
mobile, satellite and GPS networks.” - Marc Andressen (2011)

Help with Maths on Demand
I will build a place, where students who have trouble with Math can find
people with experience, book and pay for them and get tutoring.
The rest of this workshop will outline how to build a workable solution
3737
Math Tutors on Demand
1. Customer Journey - think of the draw toast exercise
Draw a customer journey. Use your favourite tool to sketch the flow and
how the users will interact with the system.
- Tech Stack: Pen paper, Whiteboard, Axure etc.
- Keep it simple, don’t think too hard about validating input or edge
cases

Math Tutors on Demand
2. Simplify Customer Journey
How can we make this really easy?
- Remove the messaging from the system
- Allow Ojo to send an email to get listed
- Allow external mechanism for payment
What’s left?
- Simple Index page with instructions on how to list your request
- A page with listing of all requests

Math Tutors on Demand
Opportunity to Validate
- Will someone find this valuable?
- Quickest way to test is to ask for payment
- Add a step to ask for payment to contact Tutor

4343
Leveraging APIs and Software to Deliver Value
What are APIs?
4444
APIS
Data input/output points that allow you to get information from multiple
services.
4545
STEPS TO TAKE TO BUILDING SOMETHING VIABLE
- Build a version of your offering using only pre-existing
technology. Deliver value manually at first, worry about scaling later.
Experiment with reaching customers across a range of popular
platforms. Prove that you can deliver the value (in your case, a
custom set of valuable data) through whatever channels they need.
- Track your customers throughout the entire customer
life-cycle.What platforms result in the highest conversion rates, the
best user experience, the lowest cost? Prioritize the touch points in
order of lowest overall cost of acquisition of customers and delivery
of the service. After you have delivered value to a number of
different customers on a number of platforms you can make an
informed decision about building technology.
- Gradually replace manual effort with technology components
one at a time. Only when you are serving so many customers that
you have to turn some away or put them on a waiting list, should you
consider investing money in product development.

Billin
Billin is an online bill management service that allows you
to keep up to date with your bills and subscriptions.
Billin uses artificial intelligence to automate the
processing, management and payment of bills. The
artificial intelligence agent - code name Edmund-
identifies when you get a bill in your inbox, adds it your
bills list and let’s you know when to pay your bills, putting
you in control of your finances and saving you money in
late fees.
We designed, developed the billin app and artificial

Shouter is a voice based platform for sending and receiving
voice messages (shouts) between friends and family within a
group conversation format in a playlist.
Shouter is a social way to use and share your voice, across
networks the platform can also be used for messaging and
communication as well. The Shouter experience the makes

It was great to work with the team. They were 100%
committed to our project and very focused on delivering a
good outcome at the end.
The team understood our values and strategic positioning
