What is a computer?
 Computer A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control
of instructions stored in its own memory that can accept data (input),
process the data according to specified rules, produce information
(output), and store the information for future use1
Types of Computers
 As we mentioned above the computers have undergone
many generations
Also lets us look the main categories of computers
 Personal computers
 Minicomputers
 Mainframe computers
supercomputers
Personal Computers Minicomputers
Mainframe Computers Supercomputers
Parts of the Computer System
 Computer systems have four parts:
Hardware
Software
Data
 User
What is Software ?
 Software: is a set of computer programs and associated documentation
and data.
Software Types
 System software
 Application software
System Software Application Software
1)Microsoft Windows
2) Linux
3) Unix
4) Mac OSX
5) DOS
1)Opera (Web Browser)
2) Microsoft Word (Word Processing)
3) Microsoft Excel (Spreadsheet
software)
4) MySQL (Database Software)
5) Microsoft PowerPoint (Presentation
Software)
6) Adobe Photoshop (Graphics Software)
.
What is Hardware?
 Hardware is the collection of all the parts you can physically
touch.
 Hardware consists of electronic devices ,which you can touch or
see.
 Also we can say hardware is physical part of computer.
The main components of computer hardware
 There many components of computer hardware so that lets
us look some components of computer hardware.
 Cases
 Keyboard
 Monitor
 Mouse
 Motherboard
 Power supply
 RAM(Random Access Memory)
 CPU(Central Processing Unit)
Cases
 The case of the computer is metal or plastic box designed to protect.
 the motherboard, the drives, and power supplies.
 The computer case should be durable, easy to service, and have enough room
for expansions and the below diagram is the case of computer.
Structure of computer
 Input unit: keyboard ,mouse ,scanner and microphone and etc.
 Output unit: screen(monitor),printers, speakers and etc.
 Central processing unit(CPU)
 memory(RAM and ROM)
 motherboard
What is an Input Devices?
 Input is a data entered into the computer
What is an Output Devices?
 Output is data processed by the computer
Input units:
Keyboard: – Keyboard is a input device which allows user to enter the data
into the computer.
The keyboard is also used to type something or input information to the
computer.
What is Mouse?
A mouse is a small device used to point to and select items on your
computer screen
 Is a pointing device that fits under palm of hand
Every modern computer requires a mouse for faster
Also mouse is a part of input devices
Scanners:-
 Scanners allow you to transfer pictures and photographs to your
computer
 A scanner is used to scan the images and pictures You can then send the
image to someone
Digital Camera:-
 Allows you to take digital pictures
 Images viewable immediately on camera
Output units
 Monitor:-
 The monitor is used to display the information on the screen.
 All the activities of a computer, functions and tasks are seen on the
computer screen and this is called outputting information.
Printers:-
 The printer is a output device that takes the information from the PC and
transfers it to the paper of different sizes , which are placed in the printer
device
Speakers and Headsets: are output device that produces
music, speech, or other sounds
Central processing unit (CPU)
 Central processing unit (CPU) - the microprocessor “brain” of the
computer system is called central processing unit.
 Below the diagram is the structure of the CPU and How It Works.
What is a memory?
 Is a electronic components that store instructions , data and results
 There are many memories inside the computer but in our
syllabus we have taken two important memory types and they are
RAM(Random Access Memory)
ROM(Read-Only-Memory)
Random access memory(RAM)
 Used to temporarily store information with which the computer is
currently working.
Motherboard
This is the main circuit board to which all of the other internal components
connected.
 Motherboard else is the main circuit board in system unit.
Some other Examples of Application Software
 Photoshop
Notepad, WordPad
What is Data?
 Data is a collection of individual statistics, facts, or items of information.
Types of Number System computer
 Binary number system
decimal number system
 Octal number system
Hexadecimal number system
Computer disk drive
 Hard disk drive
 floppy disk drive
 compact disk Read-Only-Memory
What is Storage ?
 A storage device: is used in the computers to store the data.
 Provides one of the core functions of the modern computer.
Windows
Introduction to the Windows
 Windows is an operating system issued by Microsoft Corporation, it enables your
computer to operate at its full power.
 Windows Desktop
Start button
 Helps you to:
 start a program
 open document
 change system settings
 get help
 search files and folders and
 shut down the computer
Shutting down and restarting the computer
1. Open start menu and choose shut down.
2. Or choose any of the following options
 Log off
 Shut down
 Restart
Creating new folder
1. Right click on a blank space.
2. select New
3. Select any type of the folders in the list.
4. Type the name of the folder.
2. Renaming a Folder
1. Right-click button on the object you want to rename
2. Select Rename
3. Type the new name
4. Click any where or press enter
3. Deleting a Folder
1. Right-click on the object you want to delete
2. Select Delete
3. Click Yes to confirm deletion
Starting Control Panel
1. Open Start Menu
2. Select Settings
3. Select Control Panel
2. Correcting Date and Time
1. In the control panel click Date and Time
2. Adjust the date and time
3. Click Apply then OK
