    Designing effective surveys is not just about asking questions. It is about understanding how people think, remember, decide, and respond. Cognitive science offers powerful models that help researchers structure surveys in ways that align with mental processes. The foundational work by Tourangeau and colleagues provides a four-stage model of the survey response process: comprehension, retrieval, judgment, and response selection. Each step introduces potential for cognitive error, especially when questions are ambiguous or memory is taxed. The CASM model -Cognitive Aspects of Survey Methodology- builds on this by treating survey responses as cognitive tasks. It incorporates working memory limits, motivational factors, and heuristics, emphasizing that poorly designed surveys increase error due to cognitive overload. Designers must recognize that the brain is a limited system and build accordingly Dual-process theory adds another important layer. People shift between fast, automatic responses (System 1) and slower, more effortful reasoning (System 2). Whether a user relies on one or the other depends heavily on question complexity, scale design, and contextual framing. Higher cognitive load often pushes users into heuristic-driven responses, undermining validity. The Elaboration Likelihood Model explains how people process survey content: either centrally (focused on argument quality) or peripherally (relying on surface cues). Users may answer based on the wording of the question, the branding of the survey, or even the visual aesthetics rather than the actual content unless design intentionally promotes central processing. Cognitive Load Theory offers tools for managing effort during survey completion. It distinguishes intrinsic load (task difficulty), extraneous load (poor design), and germane load (productive effort). Reducing the unnecessary load enhances both data quality and engagement. Attention models and eye-tracking reveal how layout and visual hierarchy shape where users focus or disengage. Surveys must guide attention without overwhelming it. Similarly, the models of satisficing vs. optimizing explain when people give thoughtful responses and when they default to good-enough answers because of fatigue, time pressure, or poor UX. Satisficing increases sharply in long, cognitively demanding surveys. The heuristics and biases framework from cognitive psychology rounds out this picture. Respondents fall prey to anchoring effects, recency bias, confirmation bias, and more. These are not user errors, but expected outcomes of how cognition operates. Addressing them through randomized response order and balanced framing reduces systematic error. Finally, modeling approaches like like cognitive interviewing, drift diffusion models, and item response theory allow researchers to identify hesitation points, weak items, and response biases. These tools refine and validate surveys far beyond surface-level fixes.

    Remember that bad survey you wrote? The one that resulted in responses filled with blatant bias and caused you to doubt whether your respondents even understood the questions? Creating a survey may seem like a simple task, but even minor errors can result in biased results and unreliable data. If this has happened to you before, it's likely due to one or more of these common mistakes in your survey design: 1. Ambiguous Questions: Vague wording like “often” or “regularly” leads to varied interpretations among respondents. Be specific—use clear options like “daily,” “weekly,” or “monthly” to ensure consistent and accurate responses. 2. Double-Barreled Questions: Combining two questions into one, such as “Do you find our website attractive and easy to navigate?” can confuse respondents and lead to unclear answers. Break these into separate questions to get precise, actionable feedback. 3. Leading/Loaded Questions: Questions that push respondents toward a specific answer, like “Do you agree that responsible citizens should support local businesses?” can introduce bias. Keep your questions neutral to gather unbiased, genuine opinions. 4. Assumptions: Assuming respondents have certain knowledge or opinions can skew results. For example, “Are you in favor of a balanced budget?” assumes understanding of its implications. Provide necessary context to ensure respondents fully grasp the question. 5. Burdensome Questions: Asking complex or detail-heavy questions, such as “How many times have you dined out in the last six months?” can overwhelm respondents and lead to inaccurate answers. Simplify these questions or offer multiple-choice options to make them easier to answer. 6. Handling Sensitive Topics: Sensitive questions, like those about personal habits or finances, need to be phrased carefully to avoid discomfort. Use neutral language, provide options to skip or anonymize answers, or employ tactics like Randomized Response Survey (RRS) to encourage honest, accurate responses. By being aware of and avoiding these potential mistakes, you can create surveys that produce precise, dependable, and useful information.     Imagine this: you’re filling out a survey and come across a question instructing you to answer 1 for Yes and 0 for No. As if that wasn't bad enough, the instructions are at the top of the page, and when you scroll to answer some of the questions, you’ve lost sight of what 1 and 0 means. Why is this an accessibility fail? Memory Burden: Not everyone can remember instructions after scrolling, especially those with cognitive disabilities or short-term memory challenges. Screen Readers: For people using assistive technologies, the separation between the instructions and the input field creates confusion. By the time they navigate to the input, the context might be lost. Universal Design: It’s frustrating and time-consuming to repeatedly scroll up and down to confirm what the numbers mean. You can improve this type of survey by: 1. Placing clear labels next to each input (e.g., "1 = Yes, 0 = No"). 2. Better yet, use intuitive design and replace numbers with a combo box or radio buttons labeled "Yes" and "No." 3. Group the questions by topic. 4. Use headers and field groups to break them up for screen reader users. 5. Only display five or six at a time so people don't get overwhelmed and bail out. 6. Ensure instructions remain visible or are repeated near the question for easy reference. Accessibility isn’t just a "nice to have." It’s critical to ensure everyone can participate. Don’t let bad design create barriers and invalidate your survey results.     A good survey works like a therapy session. You don’t begin by asking for deep truths, you guide the person gently through context, emotion, and interpretation. When done in the right sequence, your questions help people articulate thoughts they didn’t even realize they had. Most UX surveys fall short not because users hold back, but because the design doesn’t help them get there. They capture behavior and preferences but often miss the emotional drivers, unmet expectations, and mental models behind them. In cognitive psychology, we understand that thoughts and feelings exist at different levels. Some answers come automatically, while others require reflection and reconstruction. If a survey jumps straight to asking why someone was frustrated, without first helping them recall the situation or how it felt, it skips essential cognitive steps. This often leads to vague or inconsistent data. When I design surveys, I use a layered approach grounded in models like Levels of Processing, schema activation, and emotional salience. It starts with simple, context-setting questions like “Which feature did you use most recently?” or “How often do you use this tool in a typical week?” These may seem basic, but they activate memory networks and help situate the participant in the experience. Visual prompts or brief scenarios can support this further. Once context is active, I move into emotional or evaluative questions (still gently) asking things like “How confident did you feel?” or “Was anything more difficult than expected?” These help surface emotional traces tied to memory. Using sliders or response ranges allows participants to express subtle variations in emotional intensity, which matters because emotion often turns small usability issues into lasting negative impressions. After emotional recall, we move into the interpretive layer, where users start making sense of what happened and why. I ask questions like “What did you expect to happen next?” or “Did the interface behave the way you assumed it would?” to uncover the mental models guiding their decisions. At this stage, responses become more thoughtful and reflective. While we sometimes use AI-powered sentiment analysis to identify patterns in open-ended responses, the real value comes from the survey’s structure, not the tool. Only after guiding users through context, emotion, and interpretation do we include satisfaction ratings, prioritization tasks, or broader reflections. When asked too early, these tend to produce vague answers. But after a structured cognitive journey, feedback becomes far more specific, grounded, and actionable. Adaptive paths or click-to-highlight elements often help deepen this final stage. So, if your survey results feel vague, the issue may lie in the pacing and flow of your questions.     After more than 25 years in market research, I’ve learned that a single poorly worded survey question can mislead teams and compromise decision-making. One of my most memorable examples of this was when I had a client that had built a prototype of a device to track and monitor driving and wanted to target parents with teenage drivers. This was their question: With 8% of all fatal crashes occurring among drivers ages 15 to 20, motor vehicle deaths are the second-leading cause of death for that age group. We know your child’s safety is of utmost importance, and you are willing to do whatever you can to keep them safe.  How likely would you be to install a device in your car to track and monitor your teenage driver? I told them that question would guilt a lot of the parents into selecting a positive rating, but it would not give them an accurate, unbiased estimate of market potential. Here's the wording they finally agreed to. A manufacturer has created a device that tracks a driver’s behavior (e.g., speeding, slamming on the brakes) and their location. It allows a user to set boundaries for where a car can be driven and be notified if the boundaries are crossed. It also allows a user to talk to the driver while they are on the road. How likely would you be to install a device with those capabilities to monitor your teenage driver? The results were not very favorable, which upset the client but also prevented them from making an expensive mistake. #MarketResearch #SurveyDesign #DataDrivenDecisions

  • A LinkedIn contact recently DMed me to get some advice. She was struggling to get people to answer her survey. This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from marketers who are conducting survey-based research. While there is no “easy button” you can push to get the right people to spend time on your survey, here are a few practical things I would suggest. 👉 Make it clear why you’re doing the survey If you're asking your own audience to take your survey, they need to understand why they should invest their time. Your survey intro should clearly share: - Why you are conducting this research - How long it will take - How you’ll use the results to help the participant 👉 Evaluate your screening criteria I recently worked with a client on a niche B2B survey. As we tested the survey, we saw that a high percentage of respondents were getting disqualified. Our issue: the screening criteria was too restrictive. Our solution was think about who could answer our survey even if it wasn't our ideal audience. We simplified and broadened our criteria and had a much easier time getting people to respond. If you have screening/disqualification logic in place, consider if you can broaden it. 👉 Make the first questions easy to answer The most common place people drop off on surveys is at the beginning. I’m not sure why this is, but I suspect it’s because people are wondering: - Do I have the right knowledge to answer this question? - How difficult/time-consuming will this be? To get people invested, make sure the initial questions are super easy to answer. Said another way: don’t do what you see in this screenshot here (which comes from my "survey questions gone wrong" swipe file). As you can see, this is the first question they asked, which is ridiculously hard to answer.     $10𝗞+ 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 Here’s why: A B2B marketing team launched a data privacy survey with a market research firm. When the content team was ready to turn the results into a report, they asked me to jump in and help them make sense of the data. But the data had 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 interesting to say. Here’s what went wrong—and how to avoid the same mistake: ❌ Screener questions were too obvious “Does your company have a data ethics policy?” Yes = continue. No = screen out. This signals the “right” answer and invites bots or biased responses. ✅Better: Ask about 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘦 policy types and let people select all that apply. You validate real awareness and filter bad data without making it obvious what you're looking for to qualify. ❌ Too many vague 1–5 scale questions Example: “Rate your agreement on a scale of 1 to 5: Our company has a privacy vision statement…” Hard to interpret what the number really means to each respondent, and it makes for a terribly boring headline. ✅Better: Offer structured options that reveal actual maturity levels. Now you can say things like: Only 1 in 4 marketers have a formal privacy vision 40% say they’re “working on it” — what’s stopping them? ❌ Redundant phrasing, no new insight Two questions swapped “aware” vs. “educated” on privacy laws. ✅Better: Ask how teams 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯—mandatory training, optional resources, or nothing at all? ❌ High-level statements with no behavioral clarity “We evaluate vendors based on our values” sounds good… but tells you nothing. ✅Better: Ask what they 𝘥𝘰—privacy assessments, onboarding questions, or hand it off to IT? This is where most surveys fall short. You get clean language, but no contrast. No gaps. No tension. No story. But if you design with storytelling in mind, the insights write themselves.     On survey items and publication (or get it right or get out of here!) As an author & an editor, one of the most damning indictments of a paper is a reviewer saying "the items do not measure what the authors claim to study." When I see that criticism, I typically flip through the paper, look at the items, & more often than I would like, the reviewer is right. Leaving little choice, re-do the study or have it rejected. This is frustrating, bc designing effective measures is within the reach of any author. While one can spend a lifetime studying item development, there are also simple guides, like this one offered by Pew (https://lnkd.in/ei-7vzfz), that, if you pay attention, can help you pre-empt many potential criticisms of your work. But. It takes time. Which is time well-spent, because designing effective survey questions is a necessary condition for conducting high impact research. Why? Because poorly written questions lead to confusion, biased answers, or incomplete responses, which undermine the validity of a study's findings. When well-crafted, a survey elicits accurate responses, ensures concepts are operationalized properly, & create opportunities to provide actionable insights. So how to do it? According to Pew Research Center, good surveys have several characteristics: Question Clarity: Questions are simple, use clear language to avoid misunderstandings, & avoid combining multiple issues (are not double-barreled questions). Use the Right Question Type: Use open-ended questions for detailed responses & closed-ended ones for easier analysis. Match the question type to your research question. Avoid Bias: Craft neutral questions that don’t lead respondents toward specific answers. Avoid emotionally charged or suggestive wording. Question Order: Arrange questions logically to avoid influencing responses to later questions. Logical flow ensures better data quality. Have Been Pretested: Use pilot tests to identify issues with question wording, structure, or respondent interpretation before finalizing your survey. Use Consistent Items Over Time: Longitudinal studies should use consistent wording & structure across all survey iterations to track changes reliably. Questionnaire Length: Concise surveys reduce respondent fatigue & elicit high-quality responses. Cultural Sensitivity: Be mindful of cultural differences. Avoid idioms or terms that may not translate well across groups. Avoid Jargon: Avoid technical terms or acronyms unless they are clearly defined. Response Options: Provide balanced & clear answer choices for closed-ended questions, including “Other” or “Don’t know” when needed. So why post a primer on surveys & items? BC badly designed surveys not only get your paper to reject, but they also waste your participants' time - neither of which is a good outcome. So take time your time, get the items right, get the survey right, and you be far more likely to find a home for your work. #researchdesign

    We’ve collected hundreds of millions of in-product survey responses, and one small change can 3-5x response rates: start with what’s called a “closed” question with pre-set options for the user to choose from. A simple set of pre-set choices is easier for users to engage with, reducing friction and boosting participation. Even if open-ended text responses are more valuable, placing them after a closed question drives higher responses overall. For example: ❌ Wrong: What feature should we build next? (open) → How important is it? (closed) ✅ Right: Which feature should we build? (closed) → Why? (open) Next time you run an in-product survey, start with a closed question, then follow up with an open question. You’ll collect more responses, guaranteed.

Invariably, it will be low response rates, skewed feedback, and poor insights. But here's the truth: people aren't tired of giving feedback—they're tired of responding to bad surveys. So, how do you design research that respects your customers' time and earns their trust? 𝗕𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 - Ask only what you'll use. Customers can sense when questions are just filling space. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗜𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 & 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 - Lengthy, repetitive surveys are a one-way ticket to disengagement. Prioritize the essentials 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 - Use skip logic, make it feel relevant, and show you know who they are, like addressing them by name and skipping their age and gender questions. 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 - A poorly timed survey can feel intrusive. Consider the context—when are they most likely to be in the mindset to respond? 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽 - Always share what you've done with their feedback. Nothing motivates participation like seeing real impact. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖. 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖. And better data starts with respect for your customers' time, attention, and voice. Because if your research doesn't work for your customer, it won't work for your business either.
