As time has passed, schools have been forced to recognize that #AI is here to stay, and a vision for coexistence is necessary. I recently listened to an interview between Adam Grant and Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy. They delved into the evolving landscape of education, highlighting the transformative role of AI in reshaping learning processes and outcomes. Khan emphasizes the significance of mastery learning in education, a paradigm shift from traditional methods that often leave students with gaps in understanding. He advocates for a system where students are not just pushed forward after achieving a minimum grade but are encouraged to attain full comprehension of a topic. Leveraging AI will help achieve this goal. He envisions AI playing a pivotal role in personalizing education. He foresees AI as a tool to address the long-standing challenge of differentiation in teaching, where students' unique interests and learning paces are accommodated. AI, according to Khan, could act as a one-on-one tutor, providing tailored support to each student. This individualized approach could help bridge learning gaps, thereby promoting mastery. He discusses the potential of AI in enhancing writing skills. What AI can do is quite amazing. Do you think this is a glimpse into EdTech's future potential? Lecturing could be done differently, allowing educators to focus on facilitating rich discussions and applied learning. At the same time, AI reinforces core concepts through interactive practice. ➔ Or students mastering subjects at their own pace by simply asking GPT-4 for guided walkthroughs. ➔ The ability to personalize learning and provide on-demand tutoring at a massive scale is staring us in the face. But like any transformative technology, AI in education has some serious pros and cons. On the plus side, it could considerably enhance learning accessibility and quality. Supplementing human instruction with 24/7 virtual tutors could help bridge gaps where expertise or resources are limited. And honestly, routine knowledge transfer may be better suited for AI to free up educators to cultivate higher-order skills. The downsides, however, can't be ignored. There are huge hurdles around cost and equitable access to the required tech and internet infrastructure. A lack of human input could also hamper critical thinking development. We must also be vigilant about AI perpetuating societal biases through the data it's trained on. Ultimately, I believe EdTech like GPT-4 is too powerful an opportunity to ignore—but it would have to be implemented smartly with plenty of guard rails. We have a real opportunity to create a future of learning that allows greater access, more meaningful interactions between faculty and students, and a more efficient delivery model. However, we need to thoughtfully augment human expertise and pedagogy, not hand over learning to AI.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧 2024 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝? 🤓 Staying on top of AI news is no easy task. Using tools like Google Alerts or automated news platforms like Newslit News have been important for keeping me informed and up to date. An article came across my feed today I had to geek out on. It’s how teachers are increasingly using generative AI tools like MagicSchool, powered by OpenAI, to make lesson planning more engaging and relevant for students. Tools like these are even restoring the work-life balance for teachers, allowing them to spend more quality time with their families and come to work refreshed. While its potential to streamline processes and create personalized experiences is unmatched, its application requires caution. Teachers have also been keenly aware of this and understand the need for a human touch when reviewing AI-generated content for bias or errors. These challenges are not unique to teaching. All industries adopting AI into their workflows will need to have a plan in place to filter challenges like this. As the AI Education Project and other initiatives train educators in AI applications, there's hope for a future where teachers harness AI's potential while staying grounded in human ethics and judgment. It’s crucial that as we move forward, we strike a balance between automation and human intuition. Ensuring that AI augments the teaching experience rather than replacing it. As education continues to evolve, it's heartening to see educators, AI developers, and the wider community engaging in collaborative conversations to shape a better future for our students. Earlier this month, Teach For America published its evolving perspective on #ai and #aieducation. My colleagues Ariam Mogos Yusuf Ahmad and Michelle Culver were key authors of this piece. They continue to push my thinking about what's possible with this emerging tech. A part I loved ❤️: "Harness AI to help more fundamentally reinvent school: Previous technology waves (e.g., the advent of personal computers and the internet) were largely assimilated within century-old, conventional schooling methods, such as siloed subject areas and whole-class, age-based instruction. Breakthroughs in AI pose a unique opportunity to transform what, how, and with whom young people learn, unlocking the potential for greater student agency, creativity, and higher order thinking. Young people have a new opportunity to leverage AI tools to drive their own learning, both on assigned topics and their own curiosities and passions. Some teachers believe that AI can shift students away from teacher-constructed prompts to more in-class time for inquiry, community building, and teacher coaching. Leveraging AI to meaningfully advance learner agency, real-world relevance, and customization requires a deeper redesign of the structures of our current system, as well as thoughtful approaches to innovative design, experimentation, and applied research."

In a previous Fast Company article, 'The Urgent Call for Educational Innovation' (link in comments), I explored how our human capital—comprising individuals' collective knowledge, skills, and attributes—is fundamental to the productivity and growth of organizations and economies. I argued that addressing learner variability through personalized learning, tailored to individual needs, is essential for meeting the challenges of the 'age of accelerations' we live in. My participation in the ASU+GSV AIR Show, ASU+GSV Summit, and #AILiteracyDay at the U.S. Department of Education provided firsthand insights into the collective efforts to create a learning infrastructure capable of keeping pace with rapid changes. The vision, urgency, and collaborative actions I observed among educators, policymakers, philanthropists, and technologists underscore a shared recognition of AI's transformative role in reinventing and reimagining learning. Importantly, the strategies discussed prioritized inclusivity, accessibility, and equity, ensuring that opportunities are equitably distributed to benefit all. Expanding on this concept, my latest article, 'Embedding AI into Education Will Personalize Learning,' published in Fast Company, draws on insights from Bloom's 2 Sigma research and our work at Age of Learning. We outline a holistic framework that fully integrates AI across all learning facets, using real-time data to monitor progress and tailor materials for educators, caregivers, and learners. The article also highlights the proactive initiatives of the nation's two largest school districts: NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS and Los Angeles Unified School District. These districts drive change with tangible actions, establish policy safeguards to mitigate risks, and implement impactful solutions. Their goal is to redefine current learning experiences with AI and equip students to master this critical technology for future success. Being at the forefront of this journey is deeply inspiring and invigorating. We can harness the power of technology to create an educational system that meets the needs of every student, both academically and as a lifelong learner.
