Major economies are wielding industrial policy to shore up national security and secure geopolitical advantage – which risks squeezing out emerging economies. Are you alert to phishing? This #cyber scam occurs when hackers manipulate people, often via email, to hand over sensitive information or install malware on their machines. And the rise of Gen AI has taken it to a whole new level. Fortunately, AI isn’t only a weapon in the hands of cybercriminals: it can also be used to fight fire with fire and supercharge defences against #phishing - by monitoring suspicious messages, patrolling systems for vulnerabilities and scanning the torrent of incoming emails for the most dangerous attacks so that human experts can investigate them. Global #cybercrime is expected to cost $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, up from $3 trillion in 2015. The World Economic Forum's Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025 identifies the major trends making #cyberspace increasingly unpredictable, and outlines the importance of building cyber resilience. In some countries, many detainees lack access to a defence attorney, says human rights lawyer Karen Tse. This leaves them open to being beaten and tortured, held without trial or simply lost in the system. With no one to defend them, many of those imprisoned can languish for years for the smallest crime - or even for no crime at all. Tse is the founder and CEO of International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) an NGO that works to guarantee for all citizens proper legal representation, the right to a fair trial, and freedom from torture. In 25 years, the organization has helped to train 48,000 defence lawyers, who have collectively handled more than half a million cases worldwide. Karen Tse is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Civil Society, a group of leaders from a wide range of fields who come together with government and business actors to find solutions to global challenges.
