About us
The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich operates one of the most powerful supercomputer infrastructures in Europe and will be hosting the first European Exascale supercomputer JUPITER soon. In funded projects and co-operations, the centre drives developments towards modular Exascale systems and tackles the challenges associated with scaling up applications for next-gen supercomputers. Furthermore, JSC conducts quantum computing research and provides access to cutting-edge quantum systems through the Jülich Unified Infrastructure for Quantum computing (JUNIQ). The centre also offers higher education for bachelor, master and doctoral students in close cooperation with neighbouring universities, thereby fostering the next generation of scientific leaders. JSC is committed to enabling scientists and engineers to solve highly complex, grand challenges of our society with the help of supercomputing as well as collaborative data and compute infrastructures. Staff and users together develop algorithms in domain-specific Simulation and Data Laboratories. These innovations are ultimately used in earth system science, neuroscience, energy and materials science as well as computational biology applications. In the realm of computer science, JSC researchers focus on modular supercomputing, cluster computing, performance analysis of applications, visualization, computational steering and federated infrastructures. Also, JSC experts carry out research on mathematical methods and models, as well as their parallel implementations. The center’s research is performed through collaborative infrastructures, exploiting extreme-scale supercomputing, AI at scale, quantum computing, cloud and federated data services. To support users on the supercomputer systems, JSC applies its expertise in the field of High-Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and data science in general.

📢 ICON team awarded with renowned Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modelling🥳 A research team from #JSC, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum | DKRZ | Universität Hamburg, CSCS and ETH Zurich, as well as NVIDIA, has won the prestigious 🏆 Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modelling. 🍃 The Gordon Bell Prizes are among the most important awards in the field of high-performance computing. 🚀 🌐 The winning entry was a novel approach that allows the Earth system to be simulated with unprecedented spatial accuracy. To achieve this, the team used Europe's first⚡exascale supercomputer, #JUPITER, and the Swiss supercomputer Alps. 💡At the heart of the model is an enhanced version of the ICON climate model, which couples the atmosphere, ocean, land surfaces and sea ice and, thanks to improved detail, allows key processes such as convection, heavy precipitation and ocean eddies to be represented much more realistically than before. 🌍🌊 🌧️ The researchers benefited from algorithmic innovations and the targeted use of NVIDIA's powerful GH200 hardware, which they were able to use on the JUPITER exascale computer as part of the⚡JUPITER Early Access Programme (JUREAP). The award was presented today at noon at the SC25 supercomputing conference in St. Louis. Computing With Light 💡: Forschungszentrum Jülich & Q.ANT GmbH Launch Collaboration on Photonic Computing 🤝 JSC and Stuttgart-based technology company Q.ANT are launching a multi-year development partnership to systematically explore the potential of photonic computing for #HPC, and to identify new application opportunities. ☑️ Aims: ⏺️ Integrate Q.ANT’s photonic processor into JSC’s modular computing infrastructure. ⏺️ Develop new methods and algorithms that make optimal use of the unique properties of computing with light. 💡 Photonic computing uses light waves instead of electronic currents to process data. This enables complex mathematical operations to be carried out with virtually no heat generation, and with significantly lower energy consumption. Given the growing energy demands of data centres, light-based computing is considered a promising approach for creating more sustainable computer architectures for the future. 🧱 With its “Modular Supercomputing Architecture”, JSC pursues an innovative approach, in which different computing modules can be flexibly combined. By integrating photonic technologies into this modular architecture, JSC expands its capabilities for experimental computing methods—complementing existing activities that range from advancing classical high-performance systems to energy-efficient architectures and novel computing paradigms, such as quantum and neuromorphic computing. 🤝 The collaboration between JSC and Q.ANT demonstrates how emerging technologies can be incorporated into the supercomputers and data centres of the future. Together, the partners aim to test innovative computing methods and lay the foundation for a new generation of powerful, energy-efficient, high-performance systems in Europe. 👀 Curious to learn more? Today (Tue, 18 Nov) at 1:00pm - 1:30pm CST, experts from Q.ANT GmbH will talk about "Next-Gen Compute: Efficient Photonic Processing" at the JSC Booth 505 at #SC25! ➡️ Press Release: https://lnkd.in/e_Yqq_Vs #Photonic #PhotonicComputing #Supercomputing #HPCignites
