A First for the Mining and Resources Sector: Setting Up our Industry AI Hub

BHP is partnering with the Singapore Government and AI Singapore to establish an Industry AI Hub, to help improve safety and lift productivity across the group.  

The Hub will apply AI technologies to enterprise-wide challenges and explore how we can further integrate data-driven decisions, intelligence, and automation into our core operations. 

We're already seeing the value of AI across our business today, and this initiative will help build on that momentum for tomorrow.

Digging Deep: What 35 Years at BHP Taught COO Edgar Basto About Leadership

After 35 years with BHP, working across four continents and leading global operations, Chief Operating Officer Edgar Basto still lights up when he talks about the opportunity to make a positive impact - and help others do the same.

His advice for anyone navigating a career in resources?

1. Prioritise Safety and Wellbeing. Edgar is passionate about the importance of safety and wellbeing in the workplace, believing that nothing matters more than ensuring everyone returns home safely. His advice: foster a culture that values a healthier and more productive work environment for all.

From working in metallurgy in Colombia to becoming the Chief Operating Officer for BHP globally, Edgar's path highlights the importance of embracing continuous learning and adapting to new environments. His advice: be open to learning new skills and adapting to changes in your career. This mindset will enable you to seize opportunities and thrive in different roles and locations. 
3. Cultivate a Supportive Network. Edgar attributes much of his success to the support of his family, mentors, and colleagues. His advice: build a network of individuals who can offer guidance and encouragement throughout your career.

More Potash Needed to Feed a Growing World

Population growth and increased crop production has fuelled strong demand for potash since the 1960s. And with the global population expected to near 10 billion by 2050, demand for potash is projected to increase by around 70% by 2050.  

Potash is a crucial component in fertilisers used to improve crop yields and maintain soil fertility, both of which will be key to meeting growing demand for more and better food from a decreasing footprint of farmable land. 

We are set to deliver our first production of potash from our Jansen mine in Canada in late 2026.
