Nursing Policies Evaluation: What Works and What Doesn’t? Across many health systems, nursing policies are designed with good intentions to regulate practice, improve safety, and enhance patient outcomes. But intent doesn’t always translate to impact. Recent policy evaluations by bodies like the ICN-International Council of Nurses and World Health Organization (WHO) reveal gaps between policy design and its effectiveness particularly in workforce governance, nurses retention, and leadership inclusion. What works: ✅Evidence-Based Foundation ✅ Optimization of Scope of Practice ✅ Support for professional development What doesn’t: ❌ Top-down regulations ❌ Policies that focus only on compliance, not innovation ❌ Non-Adaptive Frameworks Building effective nursing systems requires evidence-informed, inclusive policies not just more of them. 📩 Book a consultation: https://lnkd.in/eVN5ZpED #NursingPolicy #GlobalHealth #HealthSystems #NursingLeadership #ICN #WHO #HealthConsulting #NursingSpectrum #policyadvisory

Well done Joppa, Aoife and team on being finalists! This project, supported by Children's Health Foundation though our Innovation seed funding programme, designed and prototyped a new model for nursing clinical handover, involving children and families in daily handover discussions, with a 'what matters to me' focus. Joppa Lynn Paris worked with her ward team and a project support team to trial the new process on Maple Ward, CHI Tallaght, making changes based on family and staff feedback, before implementing on Maple. Now,with the support of the Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) nursing quality team, commissioning, and nursing leadership, this model is trialling in two wards in Temple Street and Crumlin. The learning from all three wards will be incorporated into the handover model for our new hospital, with potential to impact over 25,000 families a year. A fantastic example of front-line innovation, supportive leadership, collaboration and scaling up for impact!
We were finalists at the Irish healthcare awards last week for our project enhancing communication with nursing staff, parents and children and young people during nursing clinical handover. The recognition of the project at this level was really important for all the hard work the group and staff have put in and to continue to implement to implement the project in advance of big move. Very proud of us all with this ☺️

Ensuring our clients receive the best possible care is a never-ending commitment. One of the many ways our nursing staff is continuing the rise to the challenge of meeting our clients’ needs is through ongoing upgrading and training. With this in mind, our Professional Practice Team launched VHA’s inaugural Nursing Clinical Excellence Workshop series focused on hands-on learning experiences designed to build confidence and strengthen clinical skills. To meet the needs of our dispersed workforce these workshops are designed for delivery at various locations and on different dates making it as easy as possible for our staff to attend. This year’s sessions focused on the Child and Nursing Team, the Kew Beach Unit Team, and our Care Team Supervisors and Clinical Leads, each playing a vital role in the success of this initiative. As the end to our first round of training approaches, we’re so proud of the achievements of our nurses and we’re already excited to expand this initiative to more nursing teams next year. #NursingExcellence #ProfessionalPractice #DeliveredWithHeart #VHAHomeHealthCare
