The international maritime sector is a vital engine for global trade, yet it is responsible for approximately 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly CO2. This volume is significant, exceeding, for example, three times the total annual emissions of Trinidad and Tobago. The essential movement of goods via sea comes with a heavy carbon footprint that contributes directly to climate change. The most immediate pathway to decarbonization involves switching to cleaner, less carbon-intensive fuels. Currently, an estimated 99% of the operational global fleet still relies on conventional petroleum-based fuels. The industry is now entering a critical transition phase driven by the growing adoption of alternative, low-carbon fuels such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen. The world’s supply of LNG is rapidly increasing. This is good news as shipowners are building more ships capable of burning natural gas as global fleets are coming under increasing pressure to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions (GHGe). However, conventional LNG does not provide a very substantial “well-to-wake” reduction in GHGe. We also see “blue” or “green” options like bio-diesel, methanol, or ammonia gaining traction but these look to be expensive and challenging in terms of availability and infrastructure modifications. LNG bunkering seems to be leading the charge to meet the first wave of IMO restrictions on GHGe but much greater reductions are needed without serious cost increases. Pressurized LNG (PLNG) offers dramatic reductions in the cost of fuel as well as GHGe. MOL Expands Its LNG Dual Fuel Fleet with New 210,000 DWT Bulker “Ruri Earth” Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has officially taken delivery of its newest LNG dual fuel bulk carrier, the Ruri Earth a 210,000 DWT vessel designed to meet the latest IMO environmental standards. This milestone highlights MOL’s ongoing transition toward cleaner fuels, with plans to operate over 90 LNG and methanol fueled ships by 2030.
